On Saturday, Democrat Julian Castro held an event in his hometown San Antonio, Texas, where he served as mayor for five years to announce he is running for president. But Castros campaign might be a bit a of a long shot considering hes polling between 0 and 2 percent in state and national polls. That said, he has all the makings of an inspirational candidate hes young and ambitious, he overcame a childhood of poverty to attend Stanford and Harvard Law, and if he wins the nomination, would be the first Latino presidential nominee on a major-party ticket. But he also disappeared from the national spotlight after 2016 and now faces an uphill battle to convince voters that he is the strongest choice to oppose President Trump in what could be a very crowded 2020 primary field.
Just 44 years old, Castro first held public office at the age of 26 when he won a seat on the city council in San Antonio. He then went on to run for mayor in 2005, but narrowly lost that race before handily winning in 2009. He was re-elected as mayor twice and made his first big national splash when he was selected as the keynote speaker of the 2012 Democratic National Convention. Castro was the first Latino to fill that vaunted speaking slot, and was labeled a rising star as a result. In 2014, then-President Barack Obama chose him to be secretary of housing and urban development, and in 2016, Hillary Clinton seriously considered Castro for her vice presidential pick, but she ultimately opted for Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine instead.

The Rats want to flip Texas in 2020, as that will give them the presidency. They will throw everything behind Castro if he seems to have some traction.
The odds are better that the Cleveland Browns will win the Super Bowl. Much better.
Identity politics is stronger than many people think. Latinos could very well flock to Castro just to have a Latino as president.
I’m sorry. Steve Sailer has this about Hoolian:
“A little more about Castro. Like Obama, he admits he’s a beneficiary of affirmative action, even giving the SAT score that got him into Stanford (1210 old style, equal to about 1300 today — the same as George W. Bush’s score, by the way)”
And identity politics is not as strong as other people think.
Latinos could very well flock to Castro just to have a Latino as president.
If it looks like Castro is going places, Latinos will flock to him, but if he looks like a loser, that won't be enough to help him.
How does he look?
“Latinos could very well flock to Castro just to have a Latino as president”
Are you kidding? That’s the entire plan! They drool on themselves thinking about the day one of them will rule the Gringos!
She FOUNDED La Raza and NEVER married the sperm donor of the twins.
EXACTLY; no way he nor his twin will EVER be president!
All the other candidates take a ride in a 737-Max8?
I live near San Antonio. It’s impossible to find a photo of either of the brothers where they are not grinning like village idiots.
So Castro polls at 0 to 2% nationally and even in his home state, but he could WIN IT ALL. Maybe if all the other candidates spontaneously combust. Geoffrey Skelly: Put down that crack pipe.
With a name like castro, he should win the dem-o-rat primaries easily.
And winged Monkeys could fly out of my butt...
IS this the best garbage story you could dig up to post as a scare tactic?
FiveThirtyEight, run by a washed-up NYT Nazi liar, was tossed onto the ashpit of history back in 2012.
LOL! and take 538 electoral votes right Skelley? Humor wise...it’s gotta be one of your all time greatest articles. LOL! Nutcase.
Dude is not likeable at all.
“hes young and ambitious, he overcame a childhood of poverty to attend Stanford and Harvard Law”
Please don’t tell me he went to those schools on taxpayer scholarships because then he would be like the Obama’s. Take the money then trash America.
