HEB - initials of the founder, Howard Edward Butt.

Still owned by the Butt family - largest privately-owned company in the US.

Interesting - though I am suspicious of the claim it is the largest privately-owned company in the US maybe that depends on definitions. Private vs Private & Family Controlled.

This list shows HEB as #13 - but interesting is that several on the list are food companies. But on that list, I am sure several are "private" but not "family owned" rather owned by large investment groups.So maybe HEB is at or near the top of family controlled private companies.

And FWIW, I knew what HEB was - I spent some time in the Austin area (Georgetown) and I have been in their markets, I just couldn't resist making a stupid (and probably old) joke.
