BROWNSVILLE — Within days of the “Remain in Mexico” policy being implemented by the Trump administration, the tent facility that will be used as virtual courtrooms to house immigration proceedings for asylum seekers is being built in Brownsville at the Gateway International Bridge.
The tent will house immigration proceedings with judges video conferencing in from courtrooms located throughout the United States.
“The federal government has begun the process of developing temporary, soft-sided structures to serve as MPP (Migrant Protection Protocols) hearing only sites, in order to address the limitations of the current immigration court locations,” the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement.
The plans are to take asylum seekers to their court hearings and take them back to Mexico while they wait for a final decision to be reached on their case. The Associated Press reported that more than 20,000 asylum seekers have been sent back to Mexico, and thousands more are on wait lists just to get to the front of the line to get an asylum interview.

About time. This was delayed for months. Virtual courts better than a bunch of trailers on military bases close to border. Maybe one in El Paso, Yuma, and San Diego also.

DHS will probably be the last department funded before Sept 30 deadline. Immigration on all issues is a major win for Trump per GOP and independents.

My understanding is that there is a handshake agreement with Pelosi and Schumer, that no partisan riders (poison pill restrictions) will be allowed for the next two year’s budgets. That may prove to be worth the paper its printed on, but it will probably depend on polling and the political situation next year. But if no new restrictions are written into law, DoD will still be able to sweep up savings, and re-program them into the Counter-drug account for wall building use, which could provide billions.
For the budget coming up, $1.6 billion is built into the ten year baseline budget, so that should be the default amount - but I have seen no real indication anywhere. I believe the Administration is asking for something like $8.7 billion.
If the full amount of emergency spending and appropriations from this year ($8.1 billion), and another $8.7 billion from next year are committed onto contracts, that would complete the great bulk of the planned barrier (if not all).
It would be hard to imagine the Democrats allowing that to occur, without fireworks.
Normal pattern of illegal immigration drops during the heat because most people are smart enough not to hike across the desert in the summer.
This “asylum seeker” nonsense is different, most of them are brought in air conditioned buses and some even fly to the border. So the heat of summer should not effect them so much. In spite of what the MSM wants people to believe this mass of illegals from the “caravans” are not walking here. They are brought to the border and let out real close to Border Patrol so there is very little walking. Probably less walking than done in shopping at the big stores.
