I was in Baltimore back in 1973 attending a 2-weeks seminar for physicians at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center. We had to have an armed guard to escort us from the hospital to the hotel across the street. One night, the guard pointed out the shadowy figure of a man waiting by the exit gate. "He's waiting to mug someone," the guard said.

I went downtown, alone, to a restaurant. I was the only white person there. The hostility toward me was palpable. I wasn't particularly afraid. I was accustomed to being the only white person, or the only American in a foreign country, or the only outsider in some other way. And I had always had a friendly and positive relationship with black people, had had only good experiences. But the hostility could not be ignored. I felt it also on the street as I waited for a taxi. A white woman got in the taxi with me. I said: "I've never seen anything like this." She replied: "I've aways been in favor in integration, but this is ridiculous."

I did walk the streets of Baltimore at night with another physician, with no trouble or harassment.

All of the above have destroyed much of black America. It didn't used to be like this. Black families used to be incredibly strong and vibrant.

Boys raised without fathers, and raised by women who themselves were raised in illegitimacy, is a cycle that just keeps turning. Until it is broken, nothing will change.
