I have long suggested practical homemade guns of the future will only use 3D printing as part of the process. They will be hybrid designs using the strengths of 3D printing and simple metal components to produce practical firearms in the home or in small, unregulated shops.
A prominent experimenter of homemade and small shop technology for crafting usable guns, Ivan the Troll (Internet screen name) claims to have made a breakthrough in home manufacture of rifled barrels. Ivan is part of, and often the spokesperson for, the Deterrence Dispensed project.
Rifling a barrel has been done for hundreds of years in small shops. It has been done by individuals over the entire period. It is not hard to do in mild steel. But it takes time, effort, a little skill and some homemade tooling that also takes some effort and skill to produce. Most current homemade and small shop guns either use mass manufactured barrels (there are hundreds of millions in existence) or use a barrel without rifling.
If the barrel is rifled, a gun meant to be shot one-handed is officially a pistol. If it is smooth bored and meant to be shot one-handed, and over 26 inches long overall, it is a firearm. If it is smooth bored and was originally manufactured to be fired from the shoulder, is less than 26 inches long, or has a barrel that is less than 18 inches long, it is classified as a short-barreled shotgun, and requires an application, interminable months or year-long waits for permission to manufacture, and a $200 tax stamp.

Well, I wish I could “read” the videos. D*** people who produce videos without captions. A lot of us out here in viewerland can’t hear worth a damn, and videos with no captions are not wildly useful.

One note: E-file Form 1s, to make a SBS or other NFA firearm, are now taking only a couple weeks to be approved.
My Bluetooth-enabled hearing aids can beam the output from the computer directly into the hearing aid....from a "bionic ear" perspective, that is about as good as it gets. Still not enough.
BUT...that plus even a crude caption (YouTube's computer-generated captioning as an example) makes all the difference.

I wear hearing aids also and they do not come close to a good pair of headphones. For the TV I use a headphone amp connected to the line-out audio. This gives me my own volume control while others can listen via the regular speaker systems at whatever level they want.
Also have finally found a really good sounding pair of wireless bluetooth ear buds - Jaybird. Comes with an app that contains a very good graphic equalizer which allows (not only) frequency gain control but also the ability to change the frequency range. Very Cool.
Not physically possible...the hearing aid is matched exactly to your hearing loss curve (if dispensed correctly). No headphone can possibly match that.
"If" you perceive that the headphone is better, I have to question the quality of your hearing aid fitting.
And with bluetooth, I have all the rest of the benefits you list (independent volume control).
