I went to Turkey at Christmas time with a Jewish friend in...hmmm..1995, I think. Pre-Erdogan for sure. It was wonderful. No veils, or less than 2% in Istanbul.. People were delighted to see Americans and there were more Christmas decorations up than on uber-liberal Bainbridge island just off Seattle.
I was devastated to learn that the country hicks in veils moved into Istanbul and elected this jerk. So many darling women who dressed as Americans and had great jobs in advertising, etc., became downtrodden or even got killed after this Islamist was elected. Of course I’ll never go back.
Comparing to London or Toronto you don’t see that many veils in Istanbul to this day.
