What keeps them from losing the personal info I submit in this claim?

Nothing but they already have the info anyway. You’re simply telling them where to mail the check.

I never authorized any “credit bureau” to gather and store information about my finances. One day I find out that there are at least 3 “credit bureaus” that do this, and that governments, employers and banks regularly fish in this information without telling me.

Then I find out that the information has been compromised. That should be more than $125.

“of course, they already have the whole thing in their records anyway ...”

Yes as do MANY others including the chinese. Not Equifax this time (they already gave it away), just one more group who can lose my info due to sloppy and insufficient security and no threat of personal consequences.

Froze my credit years ago and hoping for the best.

Why is it not their responsibility to notify EVERYONE whose data they compromised?

Could have been worse, at least it wasn’t Laz.

Exactly! I thought it was a scam. They want your name and the last 6 digits of your social security number! What are they using that for?

Several years ago, I placed what I thought was a *permanent* password- protected fraud alert on my credit.

NO ONE could look at my credit report without my express consent & I would need to personally unlock it with a password (NOT mother’s maiden name!)

This actually worked for a few years. No more pre-approved solicitations, no more “inquiries” showing up on my report.

The trick is, you must keep the fraud alert active. It’s not permanent.
As soon as you drop the ball, anyone who knows your info can either look at your info or open accounts using your info.

I checked back when this happened and they claimed I was impacted, now the site states I was not.

Strange.

We filed way back when and just got the email yesterday. Money coming to us mid October. Partial text of letter -
You filed a claim in the Equifax Data Breach Settlement between July 22, 2019 and January 22, 2020. We have processed your claim and determined that you are eligible for a Settlement payment.
You chose to receive your Settlement payment via check. The Settlement Administrator can now offer you the ability to receive your payment electronically via PayPal or pre-paid card. If you would like to switch your payment selection to electronic payment via PayPal or pre-paid card rather than a physical check, please click here.
If you do not want to change your payment selection of check, you do not need to do anything. If we don’t hear from you by October 14, 2022, your payment will be sent to you by check.
If you also filed or file a claim between January 23, 2020 and January 20, 2024, and you are eligible for a Settlement payment, we will use your most recent payment choice to send you your Settlement payment.
This notice is from the Court-appointed Settlement Administrator (JND Legal Administration), not Equifax. Please do not contact Equifax with questions. You may contact JND by email at info@EquifaxBreachSettlement.com, by phone toll-free at 1-833-759-2982, or by mail at Equifax Data Breach Settlement, c/o JND Legal Administration, P.O. Box 91318, Seattle, WA 98111-9418.

2019? Wow. I did not think there were any payouts back then. I did some looking online. And they went back to court and were awarded more settlement money as there were so many claims.
