MOSCOW, July 25 (Reuters) - Russia said on Thursday it was preparing to ban the Atlantic Council, a think tank formerly run by the U.S. ambassador to Moscow, which Russia's prosecutor general described as a security threat.
"It has been established that the activities of this organisation present a threat to the fundamentals of the constitutional order and security of the Russian Federation," the prosecutor general's office said.
It gave no further details of the reasons for the ban.
The move follows steps taken by Moscow against several other foreign non-government organisations since Russia's relations with the West deteriorated over the Ukrainian crisis in 2014 and financial sanctions that followed.
The General Prosecutor's Office said it had handed over its ruling to the Russian ministry of justice.
A spokeswoman for the Atlantic Council in Washington could not be reached by telephone and did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

Is there anything more useless than a “Think Tank”?
Well, it is a valuable tool of influence.
One thing for sure, DC doesn’t have a think tank run by a Russian ambassador.
So they whine about Russian influence here, while we’ve done a heck of a lot more in Russia than they’ve done here.
There great for spies and fellow travelers.
I wish wed ban some here. A whole lot of them in fact.
They have grown exponentially with the size and power of governments and globalism. When someone pays old politicians and connected cronies to sit around and ostensibly write position papers, they have a purpose - and this is to extort more goods from government and/or push an ideological and politicall agenda.
The funny thing is that the State Dept operations to influence affairs in foreign countries are both extensive and aggressive but for the most parts tolerated by foreign governments based on the idea of freedom of speech.
The Russian collusion hoax creates a poor precedent in that sense.
I don’t think even North Korea would whine about 13 American trolls or a couple Facebook adds supposedly ‘interfering’ with their politics.
Now tell me how would foreign governments react to any US lecturing on freedom and democracy.
Obviously those are the only places where thinking is going on. Lol.
I don’t know about thinking, but there is a lot of collusion going on.
“Is there anything more useless than a Think Tank?”
A “Thoughtless Tank”?
