If I am reading the tea leaves correctly, Trump is attempting to, essentially, negotiate for the Palestinians. What I mean by this is that he is putting them on the spot.
Kushner went around and collected about $50 billion in pledges to invest in the PA, and also in Egypt and Jordan. My guess is that number will end up being a fair bit higher.
And then, once they have all the major infrastructure and investment ideas in place, they will make this very public and international. He will have a coalition including the USA, Europe, Asia, and the Gulf States making a very public offer. It will be up to Abbas, and the Palestinian people, to accept it or reject it. Do they want to forsake another generation of people to their corruption and intransigence? Or do they want to grab the opportunity and make the most of their future?
There will be of course some big differences between this deal and the Oslo/Clinton deal - but the biggest difference and the biggest change in tactics is that this time it will all be done out in the open. Oslo/Clinton/Arafat was all negotiated in secret, allowing Arafat to walk away without the public being aware of what he walked away from. This time they won’t be able to do that.
They will be very hard pressed to walk away from it. Making it public will mean that the people will have a big say, and be able to pressure the PA leadership. The PA leadership will be afraid of this public accountability.
And if they do walk away then it will be a massive blow to the Palestinian cause both inside the PA and around the world.
“Do they want to forsake another generation of people to their corruption and intransigence? Or do they want to grab the opportunity and make the most of their future?”
What? Give up corruption and intransigence?!
