Robert Morgenthau, Longtime Manhattan District Attorney, Dies at 99
NYT ^ | 7/21/2019 | Robert D. McFadden

Posted on 07/22/2019 6:31:28 AM PDT by Borges

Robert M. Morgenthau, a courtly Knickerbocker patrician who waged war on crime for more than four decades as the chief federal prosecutor for Southern New York State and as Manhattan’s longest-serving district attorney, died on Sunday in Manhattan. He was 99.

Mr. Morgenthau’s wife, Lucinda Franks, said he died at Lenox Hill Hospital after a short illness.

In an era of notorious Wall Street chicanery and often dangerous streets, Mr. Morgenthau was the bane of mobsters, crooked politicians and corporate greed; a public avenger to killers, rapists and drug dealers; and a confidant of mayors and governors, who came and went while he stayed on — for nearly nine years in the 1960s as the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York and for 35 more as Gotham’s aristocratic Mr. District Attorney.

If my memory serves me right, he is the one - maybe the first person who Ted Kennedy called 50 years ago this very month when he ran his car off the bridge in Chappaquiddick...long time Kennedy family friend. Don’t remember the advice he gave him - probably DENY DENY DENY.....

Is he the scumbag who “exonnerated” the guilty-as-sin Central Park 5? Or was that his son and DeCommie-O?

Was he any relation to Henry Morgenthau, whose plan for the pastoralization of Germany only provoked the Nazis to fight even harder?

Henry Jr. was his father and he also had a brother named Henry.. His family were neighbors of FDR also.

“”He was the son of Elinor (née Fatman) and Henry Morgenthau Jr., who served as the Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry Truman from 1934 until 1945””

In 2002 Robert Morgenthau, District Attorney for New York County, had his office conduct an investigation and recommended to the state court that the convictions of the five men on all charges be vacated. The court vacated their convictions in 2002, and the state withdrew all charges against the men.

He was the second longest serving county/regional* district attorney. The longest was in West Virginia. The third longest was our just retired Cumberland County Maine District Attorney Stephanie Anderson.

Some states have district attorney’s that serve more then one county. Cumberland is large enough to warrant our own.
