THE MOON @ 50
Powerline ^ | 07/20/2019 | Steven Hayward

Lots of deserved recollections on the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing over the last few weeks and months. There’s not much need to repeat the main themes of the scientific marvel or adventurous spirit of that glorious enterprise. Some political aspects of Apollo, however, have not received sufficient attention. Specifically, the liberal attitude toward the moon landing is emblematic of how American liberalism had lost confidence in itself and sunk into its guilt phase from which it has never emerged.

As befits our woeful woke era, there has been a lot of comment about the lack of “diversity” among the astronaut corps, and mission control staff, and so forth, along with some brief and perfunctory mentions of how the Poor People’s Campaign, led by Rev. Ralph Abernathy (Martin Luther King’s successor), came to the Apollo 11 launch at Cape Canaveral “to protest America’s inability to choose human priorities.” And we get stupid hot take tweets like this earlier this week:

“Another is that the moon is EXACTLY the distance it needs to be....”

Not only does the moon need to be EXACTLY the right distance for a total eclipse, in order to get the eclipse like we do, where the moon “fits” the sun perfectly;

The moon also has to be the right size.
The sun has to be the right size.
And the sun has to be the right distance.

I honestly believe that God set the “heavens” in motion, and that a solar eclipse is just one of the gifts that He gave us to be in awe of, enjoy, study and learn from.

And seeing as the moon is moving away - God’s timing was also right so that humans are around to see it!

Other things about the moon. It causes tidal action which keeps ocean water moving and not becoming stagnant. I’m guessing there would still be life, but not as abundant or diverse. The sun contributes a bit to our tides.

The moon also acts as a stabilizer on our rotation. Without the moon the spinning top known as earth would wobble a lot more, and our seasons (and growing times) would be highly variable. Life without our moon (and at the right size and distance) would be a lot more difficult.

Fred at “Happy Bottom Riding Club” is played by Chuck Yeager.

Gonzales is played by Anthony Munoz - Cincinnati Bengals (1980-1992) and NFL HOF.

It’s interesting to just listen to these guys when they’re just checking out meters, gauges and other equipment. I never realized how many things were a little wonky and it’s a little scary to hear them decide to just ignore things.

That is one of my very favorite one panel cartoons. The other one involves the space shuttle pulling up to the garbage can in space, and radio going back to Houston that they found Jimmy Hoffa.

I like the one scene where they have a press conference and they praise the USA over and over and the press cheers, and the press asks them if they attend church regularly and they say yes and the press cheers, and then the press gives them a standing ovation. That would NEVER EVER happen today thanks to the Demoenemy party. Matter of fact a movie like this would never even be made today thanks to the Demoenemy party.

Fantastic rebroadcast of live footage from news networks ( on CNN and CSPAN). Was afraid they would provide leftist commentary but its not- just straight footage and commentary from those days. So exciting. Makes me so incredibly proud & brings tears even watching it 50 years later. We were and still are the greatest nation in the world.

Yep.

It wasn’t Africa or any other country who was first to land on the moon.
