On Thursday, another decades-old quote of Biden’s surfaced courtesy of the Trump campaign’s opposition research team

Since entering the presidential race, former Vice President Joe Biden has faced repeated questions about past statements he’s made criticizing school busing, fondly remembering racist white senators, and helping pass draconian laws in the ill-conceived drug war.

On Thursday, another decades-old quote of Biden’s surfaced courtesy of the Trump campaign’s opposition research team. A September 20, 1987, story in the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Biden had bragged about receiving an award from George Wallace, the former Alabama governor and one of America’s most notorious segregationists.

The same story went to quote a presidential primary campaign speech Biden had given in Alabama in which he said “we (Delawareans) were on the South’s side in the Civil War.”

I distinctly recall learning that Delaware was one of the slave states that stuck with the Union, the others being Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri and Kansas. No free states fought on the side of the South, though New York City almost became an open city, trading with both the Union and the CSA.

A September 20, 1987, story in the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Biden had bragged about receiving an award from George Wallace, the former (democrat) Alabama governor and one of America’s most notorious segregationists. (Wallace stood in the schoolhouse doors to block black children from entering a 'white' school - he's famous for saying "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever."...) The same story went to quote a presidential primary campaign speech Biden had given in Alabama in which he said “we (Delawareans) were on the South’s side in the Civil War.”

“All of Delaware’s civil war units were union units.”

That is my understanding, too. There could have been individuals from Delaware, however, that fought in butternut to preserve the Constitution.

Biden was born in Pennsylvania. All of his ancestors were from PA, not
Delaware. Delaware and Maryland had many Southern sympathizers. Maryland was on the verge of voting for secession and Lincoln threw the entire legislature in jail so they couldn’t vote to leave the Union. During the Civil War, Delaware was a slave state that remained in the Union. Although most Delaware citizens who fought in the Civil War served in regiments on the Union side, some did, in fact, serve in Delaware companies on the Confederate side in the Maryland and Virginia Regiments.

Biden will be history after the next debate when Willie Brown’s main ho attacks him for saying Obama was the first “clean” black guy, who could actually put a sentence together, to run for president. CNN will have
“Pastor” Jesse Jackson sitting in the front role and Willie’s ho will point
to him and demand an apology for belittling him in such a way. This bushwhacking is coming and there ain’t one damn thing Biden can do about it or talk his way out of it. He’ll withdraw from the race a couple days later citing health reasons.

They all had allegiance to the Union. However, some of the units did not fight at all. The 9th Delaware Infantry was on guard duty for its entire existence. Maybe the Union Army was not sure of the loyalty of men from a slaveholder state.

We? I knew Biden was old but I didn’t know he was around during the Civil War.

Delaware? It was not part of the Confederacy. Slave-holders there probably wanted to be, though.

But so was the NYTimes and Chicago Times.

Insurrection was not constitutional. Only by discarding the concept of “constitutional” would secession be constitutional.

The South “homogeneous”? Not in a pig’s eye. It had no real attraction to potential immigrants as did the North. Slavery killed Southern labor’s chances of succeeding, it could not compete with slaves hired out by their masters.

There are a couple of interesting factoids here.

  1. In the 1860 election, 70% of the voters in Delaware supported John Breckenridge (46%), or John Bell (24%), the two southern candidates. Lincoln was the third runner up just behind Bell, the more moderate of the two southern candidates who carried only Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee.

  2. As 1987 opened, Wallace was finishing his 4th and final term as Governor of Alabama. He had openly campaigned on the platform that segregation was wrong and had appointed a record number of blacks to office, including two at the cabinet level.

So Biden was right to accept an award from Wallace and right about Delaware being an ally of the south before the War Between the States. It was only one of three states to vote against Lincoln in his 1864 re-election, the others being New Jersey and Kentucky.

The South undertook a course of violent secession to preserve an economic system based on he use of slave labor and lost. The North didn't necessarily, it went to war to preserve the Union and won.
