Trump outdid himself with anti-“squad” tweets over the weekend suggesting that the four Democratic congresswomen go back where they came from. The tweets were clearly trolling and meant to be sardonic — supposedly they are to go back home, fix their countries, and then return here to tell us how it’s done, with Nancy Pelosi happy to pay the airfare.
They are several things to say about this: 1) As always, presidents shouldn’t troll; 2) on a tactical level, it’s incredibly dumb for the president to insert himself into the middle of the Democratic circular firing squad between Nancy Pelosi and Co. and AOC and Co.; 3) politically, this kind of thing repels Republican suburban women, and he’ll need to win back some increment of them in 2020; 4) substantively, three of the four targets were born in this country, but his tweets suggest that somehow they can’t be true Americans; 5) as for Ilhan Omar, who came here as a refugee, it’s absolutely fair game to excoriate her for being a poisonous ingrate, but the barroom-stool taunt of “go back to the country you came from” isn’t the way to do it.
A poor show all around.
I guess Jeb and Mitt were tired of hacking off their base.

Earlier today President Trump drew attention to another uncomfortable truth. Some of the most virulent anti-American progressive lawmakers entered the United States for the opportunity and freedom within our system. However, those same politicians then decry the U.S. and demand changes to the system providing the benefit.
In essence, do not flee to the land of liberty, indulge in the benefits and then have the audacity to criticize the foundation of the nation providing the opportunity.
The media immediately went into apoplectic fits of outrage accusing President Trump of being a racist because he calls-out the anti-American messengers directly.
After a media cycle of outrage du jour, President Trump responds:

The tactical purpose of the tweets, with Lowery totally missed, was just explained by POTUS in the following tweet:
“The Dems were trying to distance themselves from the four “progressives,” but now they are forced to embrace them. That means they are endorsing Socialism, hate of Israel and the USA! Not good for the Democrats!”

Lowry misses an important point. The “circular firing squad” he describes is exactly what Nancy Pelosi wants ... because she needs to distance herself and the Democratic Party from those four nitwits in order to protect her House majority in 2020. I totally agree. Trump gave Pelosi a no win choice. Support Trump’s tweets and look too moderate to the base or support the “squad” and attack Trump thereby forcing Pelosi back to the extreme left and allowing Trump to hold the moderate position
