Amazing thing is, what were they before a pope placed a crown on their heads, through so-called Papal “Temporal Powers?”
How could be be “royalty” before then?
They couldn’t.
Secondly, Temporal Powers is and always was a myth, as the Vatican has admitted to when they gave up pretensions to possessing it.
So they were a bunch of clod busters and thugs who took power by the sword and thereafter attempted to place some semblance of authority or veracity on this by having a pope place a crown on their heads.
