States are free to appoint electors as they choose, but they’re not free to set requirements to be president, those are listed in the constitution. I don’t see this standing Supreme Court scrutiny because it would open the door to all kinds of crazy schemes in the future. What’s to prevent a state from refusing to allow someone on a ballot if they don’t declare their support for gay rights, etc.?

What if a poor person who has no income and is not required to file a tax return wants to run for office?

States did not even check to see if the Kenyan from Indonesia was a natural born citizen.
Hawaii took Pelosi’s word on that and the other states took her wink and nod,
