Republicans went to live in slave states for the intentional purpose of buying slaves and sending them north. It was only in the dozens, or maybe hundreds. But certainly not thousands.
Republicans chose to be Republican, which inherently meant opposition to slavery. Republicans in those early years were very religious about their Republicanism.
No Republican owned a slave in the way that a Democrat owned a slave. Of course, most white Democrats were too poor to own a slave. It was the rich, and those willing to go heavily into debt who owned slaves.
“Republicans went to live in slave states for the intentional purpose of buying slaves and sending them north.”
Until very recently there was widespread belief that “not a single republican ever owned a slave.”
Now, this narrative: Republicans went to live in slave states for the intentional purpose of buying slaves and sending them north.
