There was a “Rockford Files” episode (called “So Help me God”) where Jim has to appear before a Grand Jury and questioned by a federal prosecutor. Rockford doesn’t know anything about the case. He answers the first question, and then uses the Fifth later, but it was too late, and Rockford is found in contempt of court.
Jim’s lawyer explains the penalties and it was pretty severe. Something too where if they suspend this grand jury and they call another one, he would need to be in jail instead the next grand jury is called. That episode was one of the few “issues” episodes that they did.

I’m not a lawyer, but as far as I know, it’s not Illegal to know a former president. So how would he be incriminating himself by simply saying “yes”? And how would any investigator (other than one who’s sold out) allow that answer?
