House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has issued a surprisingly scathing attack on the cadre of progressive freshmen women who have established a high profile among the chamber’s Democrats, dismissing them as having a “public whatever” but lacking significant political backing.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) shot back on Twitter, saying that the “public whatever” is public sentiment.” She added: “Wielding the power to shift it is how we actually achieve meaningful change in this country.”
Pelosi’s harsh comments followed a quote from a spokesman for Ocasio-Cortez in a Washington Post op-ed Friday that the “greatest threat to mankind is the cowardice of the Democratic Party.”
Along with Ocasio-Cortez, frequent Pelosi critics among progressive Democrats elected in 2018 include Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts ― known collectively as the “squad.”
Pelosi dismissed the women’s political clout in an interview with New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd published Saturday, as she defended herself against criticism (including in the HuffPost story “What The Hell Is Nancy Pelosi Doing?”) that she too often caves to the Republicans on legislative matters.

Sure, Sandy has youth, energy, and brown ovaries in her favor, but Pelosi has LOTS of chips to call in if she wants to destroy someone. Pelosi may be misguided, but is not stupid and easily swayed like Sandy.
