My take is he said something stupid that he regrets, but he can't take it back and knows he would be primaried out of the House. So, he's trying to endear himself with the WaPo and Swamp to try to land a cush job when he's out of government.

But there is in fact a very simple and good reason our country tends towards a political party duality. It’s the presidency.

Many countries have a Presidential system and a muliparty system, they usually have runoffs but not all do (Philippines).

It's first past the post or the plurality voting system that favors 2 parties.

Now parliamentary democracies can have first past the post and still have multiple parties, UK and Canada for example, but it works to the detriment of whichever side is more divided. The Canadian right was hopelessly out of power in the 90's because they divided into 2 parties.
