REMEMBERING HISTORY’S MOST AUDACIOUS HOSTAGE RESCUE MISSION: ENTEBBE, JULY 4, 1976

On July 4th, 1976, as America celebrated its Bicentennial, four Israeli Air Force C-130 Hercules planes carrying over 100 Jewish passengers, twelve Air France flight personnel, and their Israeli rescuers landed safely at Ben Gurion Airport. The safe landing of civilians and commandos marked the end of a week-long, nightmarish drama that gripped all of Israel.

The saga began on June 27, when a Paris-bound Air France commercial airliner took off from Tel-Aviv. The plane was scheduled for a stopover in Athens. Lax security at Athens International Airport enabled four terrorists with forged passports – two from the notorious West German Baader-Meinhof Gang and two from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – to board the flight with their guns, grenades and explosives.

Their hijacking adventure set into motion a sequence of events that would reverberate around the world. It would also ultimately serve to further enhance the prestige and reputation of Israel’s vaunted, specialized commando units and intelligences services.

Israel planned and executed that rescue in about a week.

We spent six months planning the failed Tehran raid to free US hostages, and then failed (overly complex plan) when we did try to execute it.

And we somehow thought we could keep the plans secret from the rest of the world for six months (even though our forces were practicing in Egypt — which has its own security forces and ties to the former USSR).

Success is doing what the majority says you cannot do.

I remember this clusterf**k well. I always find it funny when Jimmy Carter brags about how he didn't succumb to military action. What a jerk. Not only did he succumb but he failed big time and then quit.

Yes this was quite a rescue.

And the celebration of America’s Independence Day is not and should not be about the Entebbe.

I was told by a good source years ago that the Israels used a 45acp mac 10 instead of the Uzi 9 mm because the slower moving, heavy hitting 45 would be less likely to pass through the enemy and kill a hostage.
I’ve never been able to confirm it officially. I guess the Israels didn’t want to diminish their own weapon by disclosing this.

According to a friend who is former IDF they used Uzi’s with hollow points. He was highly offended that I even had the nerve to ask him if the MAC rumor was true. That said I am pretty sure that a few of the commandos carried AK47’s.

Right after Reagan was sworn in the hostages were released.

The Dems accused Reagan of negotiating with Iran before he was President and having the hostages held until he was inaugurated. Then as now, Dems lie about anything and everything. The difference now is that they have so many more channels to propagate their big lies.

I remember at the time an author wrote a quick short-story, released only a week or two after the raid.

Just before the raid, he'd received a telegram "Fatty's in for a big surprise."

Referring to Idi Amin.

I remember an interview of Moshe Dayan sometime after the Entebbe raid (perhaps even after Desert One) He made a point of saying that the American mindset was totally different than that of the Israelis in hostage situations. According to him, Americans concentrate on trying to avoid any injuries at all to hostages whereas the Israelis go in with the mindset that everyone is ALREADY dead.

Yes he died in the raid. I just finished watching an interview with Bibi on Objectified and he talked about his brothers death.

When I first visited Entebbe four years after the raid, that Airbus 300 was still sitting at the (old) Entebbe tower. Part of the lower skin of the port wing was missing. The Entebbe Tower was pockmarked with bullet holes.

Interesting.
