Being the father of an ex-nuke submariner, I can’t help but feel for all affected by this kind of thing. These kids are the bravest of the brave and the smartest of the smart. I cannot even fathom being at the bottom of the sea. The idea fills me with horror. And being on a boat with more destructive potential than any other man-made instrument is scary enough.

Freudian pun?
The Kursk immediately comes to mind.

Knowing there is probably another sub close by ready to “kill” your sub if war breaks out.
The Russians are so wasteful of their own people. They have these fatal incidents and their first instinct is to lie. Just like the Kursk.
I like how that reads.
I, too, am moved by the horror of their deaths, even if they might've become my enemies some day.
I remember the days of the recruiters trying to get us to join the Armed Forces. The Navy guy was a true salty dog who tried to sell me Submarine duty. I could not imagine doing that work in those conditions. Drowning is a nightmare. I went into to the Army and did something just as ridiculous: jumping out of a perfectly good airplane.
You said Fathom.
