Blacks and women were the worst tippers. Homosexuals were actually good tippers so I always tried to give them excellent service when I was a waiter, knowing it would be rewarded. Good service was wasted on blacks and straight liberal women. If you wonder how I knew, don’t ever assume your waiter isn’t listening to your conversation.

When I was working at a very high-end restaurant I was leaving for the night and saw the Maitre d' in the parking lot running after a family. "Oh, that customer forgot something," I thought. "That guy is so good!" (The Maitre d' was extremely professional and took great pride in his exacting service.)

As I watched, he handed the small tip to the customer, saying "Here, Sir. You need this more than I do." He was gone before they could think of a reaction so they just got into their car, speechless.

I’m amazed you would overhear any conversation. Whenever we find out conversation stops when the waiter approaches the table. It isn’t planned it just happens.

One place I worked at long ago actually wired the drop lights, so we could listen-in on what they were saying. It was interesting, to say the least, particularly right after bringing out the food. But the funny thing is, it did make us more responsive!
