I like westerns but sort of agree with you about “High Noon”.

Wayne thought his best movie was “Red River” and I agree with him. He always wore that “Red River D” belt buckle after that.

Louis L’Amour also hated “High Noon”. He said most of those western town residents were veterans of the War Between The States and were not the kind to go hide when some bad guys rode into town.

“The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” was a close second as his best.

I just saw the remake of "The Magnificent Seven" the other day and said basically the same thing to my wife. It seems like half of the westerns have that as a plot device - the helpless townsfolk.

Yep. What really happens is what the James-Younger gang found out in the Northfield Minnesota robbery. Say hello to an entire town of armed, pissed-off people and oh by the way, there isn't an FDIC so that's their money the gang was stealing. They chose...poorly...

Totally agree about High Noon. Highly over-rated, lousy story....

But just about any John Ford Western, from Stagecoach through the cavalry trilogy to The Searchers and on and on... I can watch them over and over. And Hawks' Red River too.

The townspeople in High Noon were tough enough to survive and thrive in the wild West, but too cowardly to stand up to a few gunslingers? Right.
