”Not everyone is leaving ... only those who haven’t been murdered yet.”

The murder victims have to stay behind to vote.

Why Are Residents Leaving Illinois in Droves?

Because Droves are cheaper and have more room than GM and Toyota? Have you seen the road test for the new Drove GT 3000?

I was born in Illinois, but moved as a teenager with my family to Colorado in 1978. Colorado was paradise for a long time, but now the leftist crazies have ruined it and I will probably look to retire somewhere else. When there’s a pot shop on every corner, and a homosexual and his “first man” (seriously, that’s what he called him) occupying the governor’s mansion, it’s time to go.

Ha, “first man”...not bloody likely.

Isn’t that a rhetorical question?

Why Are Residents Leaving Illinois in Droves?

Because they're afraid of all those roving MAGA gangs carrying nooses and bleach?

What a idiot question. He answered most of it himself. Unfriendly place to do business, high income taxes, most important High Property Taxes, and throw in Socialists and Communists running Cook County. By the way a governor who cheats on his taxes.

Most of the “whys” in the article are spot on with everyone having their own particular aversion. Although a native of Illinois and stuck here for now, I’ve lived years in other parts of the country and Europe so I know what the outside world is like. Personally my beef is the ever increasing liberal control of life due to filthy Chicago and collar county politics. High real estate taxes are a HUGE factor in people escaping. I’m especially irked by the never ending push by democrats for ever more gun controls. Actually, compared to other wretched states Illinois gun laws aren’t that bad. It was the 50th and last state to pass concealed carry in 2013 but only due to a court order. We have state preemption and no assault weapon/magazine bans..outside Cook County...but they keep pushing for them.

Stuck here for now due to family, medical access, and plain old age related inertia. We shall see.

Anybody who can should get the hell out of Ill-Noise now before property prices collapse. There’s no way they can meet their pension promises but the public sector labor unions will force them to bleed the state dry before they default.

But in the 21st century it is simply too easy to move.

The key was refrigerated air conditioning,

Yep! And funny you mentioned that. I tell people that I love Kentucky, but if God had not invented air conditioning, there is no way I’d live here.

Frankly, I remember in the 60’s through 2000’s living in Seattle. We never had air conditioning. It was not necessary. Sure, there would be hot days, but very few. And the humidity was low enough that it was totally bearable. I suspect this has opened up a lot of parts of the country to immigration from other states.

When I was driving through the really nice suburbs around Phoenix I was thinking about the Louise L’Amoure books I read about the old west and think about how inhospitable the area was not all that long ago. Now it’s a man-made paradise.

...making it one of only two states — West Virginia is the other — to lose people over the past decade.

Wow, how bad does it have to be when even the illegals don't want to move there.

Most Democrat-run states are following a similar path. They have a collection of ultra-rich, a middle class that is fleeing for better opportunities, and a lower class that is stagnant and basically imprisoned in place.

They don’t call it “Crook” County for nothin’. Chicago has ruined the entire state. Downstate is largely conservative. I was born and raised in IL, but left in the late ‘90s because the writing was on the wall. I’d encourage all conservative IL voters to move to NC!

Moonbeam Brown is available for railroading consulting!

The problem is and long has been that what Chicago wants, Chicago gets to the detriment of the rest of the state. The rest of Illinois has been basically held hostage by Chicago for many decades, it’s just come to a head to the point that it’s no longer tenable. Hell even Chicago itself is losing population, what do they expect in areas with even less opportunity as far as employment? Sure just tax them some more, yep that’ll fix it. /s
