Moore would have won had the GOP not aggressively campaigned for liberal Doug Jones. It seems the GOP prefers progressives like Jones to conservatives like Moore.

Nobody could win an election when the media-attack-liars accuse you of being a child molesting rapist on 24-7 news cycles for months and months.
The media "Kavanaughed" Moore before they did it to Brett Kavanaugh. I believe they tried it on Kavanaugh because this lying worked so well for them against Moore.
