said female applicants had performed slightly better than men this year after gender-based anomalies in the admissions procedure were removed.

Okay, so they took out math..?

“manipulated exam results to give first-time male applicants an advantage over women and others who had previously failed the exam”.’

For “stops”, read “starts”.

They don’t make the candidates present their key ring to gain entry to the exam room.

From an older article in the Guardian:

“The investigation found that in this year’s entrance exams the school reduced all applicants’ first-stage test scores by 20% and then added at least 20 points for male applicants, except those who had previously failed the test at least four times. It said similar manipulations had occurred for years because the school wanted fewer female doctors, since it anticipated they would shorten or halt their careers after having children.”

Still think this is a laughing matter?

Just how much math is required for a biology-based career?

In my tutoring I’m not aware of much besides calculus I, which is pretty good but not excessive.

You be bad!

Okay, the spread is different for males and female math test scores. More guys score high on math tests.

That difference is getting narrower as more women are taking (or allowed to take) math courses.

I loved it that the norms differed. Since so few women scored high on the math aptitude tests, those who did had a higher percentile rank! ;-)
