I wasn’t aware that the shoplifters were even Oberlin students. I just assumed they were run-of-the-mill street thugs and the SJ Oberlin glommed on to the situation to make a statement.
In any case, I’m glad they ruled in favor of Gibson. I don’t think the college will suffer, even though thet’re crying poor-mouth. I think Tucker said they have about $1 BILLION stashed away, so let them whine. Let them pay, and then whine.
Presumably, they give a lot of need scholarships to minorities. I read that Oberlin is 15% black, which is much higher than most elite schools, even though underrepresented minorities are given preference.
I wonder if white students had shoplifted and beat up the store owner trying to stop them whether they would have been in trouble with the school. That kind of behavior has to be pretty unusual for students at most elite colleges.
