When and Why Golden Geese Take Wing
American Thinker ^ | June 16, 2019 | Clarice Feldman

My friend Lynn Chu has boiled down the basis for a just, prosperous society:

“It is very easy to spend other people's money, thus eliminating all of the vital discrimination about the devils in the details which are knowable only at the level of the individual. This is the main justification for the protection of individual liberty against autocracy other than the clarity of the moral imperative of human rights as the privileges and immunities of the individual in society.”

When Great Britain turned over Hong Kong at the expiration of its lease, the Chinese government promised to leave its democratic institutions and law alone. Bit by bit, that promise has been eroded until  recently China pressured the local authorities to agree to an extradition treaty that would allow them to extradite from the former colony and try in China anyone, even someone merely transiting through its airport.

Day after day the residents in the millions resisted, marching en masse through the streets, closing down schools and shops as employers allowed workers leave to work at home and demonstrate.

Some argued that the U.S. would have to intervene, but that doesn’t  immediately seem to be necessary, as the Chinese, obviously aware that more brutal crackdown efforts or even armed intervention would more seriously affect their interests. The authorities -- clearly with China’s acquiescence -- backed down, suspending the extradition law indefinitely:

@AFP

VIDEO: 🇭🇰 Hong Kong's embattled leader #CarrieLam says a divisive bill that would allow extraditions to China will be "suspended" in a major climbdown by her government after a week of unprecedented protests.

Indeed, by several accounts, faced with  the threat of Chinese tyranny, capital has already been fleeing the colony for elsewhere. Physical security and rule of law matter. And an independent and fair judicial system.

Interesting title. It occurred to me decades ago that money (capital) was like wild animals. The more you try to fence them in the harder they try to escape.

Would be interesting to read about Jim Rogers’ take on the current situation.

He left the US when the Clinton/Bush doctrines ruled. Now, the Big Dog On The Porch is MAGA, and the Chicoms are taking it in the keister.

When and Why Golden Geese Take Wing

When: shortly after DJT leaves office in either 2020 or 2024;

Why: With the Democrat Party taking all three branches of Government, with the implementation of the green raw deal, the forced closing of all fossil fuel and nuclear power plants, including the implementation of mandated carbon sequestration, manufacturing in the US will, like the golden goose, take flight to more hospitable climes

Rich Hong Kong citizens have been buying west coast property for several years, from Victoria/Vancouver to San Diego.

A few live in their elite to normal homes, or their elderly parents or relatives do. These homes are apparently investments or safe havens in case they decide to flee from Hong Kong. In some areas, no one lives in the newly bought homes. They have professional yard outside home up keepers to ensure the homes are livable.

We know a lady realtor who specializes in foreigners buying expensive homes in N. California. Many of the buyers came from or still live in Hong Kong. They are ready to flee Hong Kong at anytime.

A secondary market for this lady for awhile was rich French families in the wine/champagne for generations or other top end businesses like perfume and designer clothing. Many of these potential buyers dropped out when they found out that they couldn’t buy and control locals in government like in France. With the Yellow Jacket revolt in France, stability is not happening there.

In the past few months, she has had some very wealthy south of the border potential buyers looking at estates.

The people who legislate higher and higher taxes might get it -- that they are encouraging out-migration of the most productive and their capital, and with that, jobs -- but they are apparently more concerned with using taxpayer funds to buy off tranches of hands-out voting blocs and donors. Short-term personal advantage outweighs greater concerns.

Just one of the reasons (out of thousands) why socialism doesn't work...

Hong Kong is not China yet, but that feared day is coming ever nearer
The Guardian ^ | Sun 16 Jun 2019 | Louisa Lim

“Not yet” is a reference to the terms of the joint declaration governing Hong Kong’s return to Chinese rule in 1997, which promised that the territory’s way of life would remain unchanged for 50 years, until 2047. When it was signed, in 1984, the year 2047 seemed impossibly far off, but the proposed extradition law brings 2047 much, much closer.

By permitting the rendition of anyone on Hong Kong soil to face trial in China, it would effectively remove the firewall between Hong Kong’s common law system and the mainland’s party-dominated legal system.

Hong Kongers have already seen irrevocable changes to their way of life: popularly elected lawmakers have been disqualified by the courts for saying their oaths too slowly or with the wrong intonation; politicians have been forbidden to stand for election; a political party has been banned; activists have been sent to prison on public-order offences...

Today, any call to public action, even the act of giving speeches to a rally, requires a greater degree of caution.
The young activists involved in recent protests have switched tactics to form leaderless, anonymous collectives, hiding their identities with face masks and using messaging apps to organize. The government has begun to act against these, arresting one Telegram group administrator on suspicion of conspiracy to commit public nuisance.
Many activists no longer welcome their photos being taken or doing interviews with foreign media. Within the course of a week, they are becoming as cautious as mainland Chinese dissidents.

But the core values that Hong Kongers cherish include universal values, press freedom, judicial independence and civil rights. These are seen by Beijing as among the “seven unmentionables”, putting Hong Kongers on the frontline of the clash between western “universal” values and the Communist party’s need for total control.

Thanks for the info. If I were a wealthy foreigner, CA would be the last place I’d want to live. Yes the climate is nice but the liberal atmosphere is stifling.
