A dozen white, male police officers reportedly filed a lawsuit against the city of San Francisco Tuesday, alleging sex and racial bias in promoting officers.
The plaintiffs allege that the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) is using a diversity technique called banding, which treats all promotional test scores within a certain range as the same. They claim the technique promotes female and minority candidates with lower scores over white men, The San Francisco Chronicle reported.
The city to this day has a long-standing practice and custom of discriminating against white males in SFPD promotions to the rank of sergeant, lieutenant and captain, the officers attorney said in the suit.
The SFPD started to use banding in 1973 after a group of black and female officers sued the force for bias against them in promotions. The technique also factors in experience and language skills. The suit alleges the continued use of banding is illegal because the 1979 settlement with black and female officers expired in 1998, The Chronicle reported.
The suit claims that three black candidates were promoted in 2016 over 11 white candidates with higher scores because of banding and four women have been promoted over seven men with higher scores.

The fire department that I was on adopted the same strategy for both hiring and promotions after the voters voted down affirmative in our state. At least with affirmative action it was visible what they were up to. With this new scheme all transparency was taken away.
When affirmative action was reinstated in our state by Governor Dimsley and our Democrat legislature I thought that maybe they would drop the nonsense, but no... now we have both. My grandson is an amazing kid who is totally committed to becoming a firefighter... they even have competitions here where young people perform all sorts of firefighting drills and he is the best in the state in most of them. He is graduating from high school tomorrow. I don’t know that even with all of his prep work if he has a chance to ever even get hired where I worked.

They only work there. Otherwise its too expensive. Most likely they work in the North Bay say in Novato. That used to be a Copopolis for the SFPD at least for the SWM’s ( Straight White Males)
She is missing a prerequisite 3rd factor like a recognized disability like dyslexia, Scoliosis or some such factor
I can get why departments might want to hire women and minorities. Women because they do, in fact, look at situations differently than mennot better, not worse, but differently and that can be an advantage in police work. Minorities because they may well have better insight into what is actually going on in the minority neighborhoods they grew up in. But in spite of what the movies tell us, 130# women aren’t nearly as good taking down a hostile subject as 200# men.
But firemen? Do women and minorities have any special insights and skills that they can bring to fighting fires? Do fires care about who might be trying to put them out? The idea of affirmative action when it comes to firemen isn’t about doing the job better, but rather a push to be “fair” when it comes to doling out decent-paying jobs in the fire station. That is, having the job filled by the “right” person is more important than actually doing the job well.
