WASHINGTON The worlds largest automakers warned President Trump on Thursday that one of his most sweeping deregulatory efforts his plan to weaken tailpipe pollution standards threatens to cut their profits and produce untenable instability in a crucial manufacturing sector.
In a letter signed by 17 companies including Ford, General Motors, Toyota and Volvo, the automakers asked Mr. Trump to go back to the negotiating table on the planned rollback of one of President Barack Obamas signature policies to fight climate change.
The carmakers are addressing a crisis that is partly of their own making. They had sought some changes to the pollution standards early in the Trump presidency, but have since grown alarmed at the expanding scope of the administrations plan.

Since when has deregulation brought less profits in?
How could reducing regulation hurt their profits?
Great minds I guess...
BS...smelly crap from sidewalks of San Francisco...
The source is NY Times.
Ever wonder why you can’t recharge your batteries?
Stockholm Syndrome?
They are trying to use an economic arguement to proffer the point that less profits will suopposedly result from this thinking this is something that capitalists will respond to.
But green cars have been pumped out for a long time and without gov’t subsidies they would have not done anywhere near the sales had they not had those subsidies under the Obama admn.
To get to the 52 mpg CAFE standard requires larding cars up with lots more high-profit things, like shutters on your front grille, lots of aluminum, etc. The car companies have been furiously investing in all that junk for a decade and their investment stands to be wiped out if Trump succeeds in rolling back CAFE.
I suspect that the profit margins on all that super duper equipment needed to reach 52 mpg are much higher than the companies earned on an old conventional car designs.
What they should really be squealing about is “Why did you damed bureaucrats make us invest tens of billions to reach 52 mpg?”
But you beat me to using that phrase!
Since they can build planned obsolescence into autos and blame the government. The drive to efficiency has killed long term quality.
I smell fake pollution.....
I guess all that pollution junk the government ‘forced’ on them were actually high profit items?
Excellent points.
More government regs and with all of the subsidies to buy certain favored cars under the Obama admnistration, guess who eventually footed the bill for the subsides on those cars?
The taxpayers.
They don’t want to have to deal with Cali state regs that differ from the rest of the US.
Tough boogers.
Maybe this deregulation will open up the auto market to smaller regional producers.
That’s what the Big 5 don’t want.
Can't they just continue doing what they're doing with the current standards they're now using?
“Hey! We PAID for those regulations to keep competition down so we’d make more profit!”
I don’t see the problem. Who is stopping them from making cars that EXCEED the standard? If there is more profit in doing that, they should be eager to do so.
But they won’t. Which is why this NYT article is fake news.
