And, to use a term of art, most competent surgeons are assholes.
Yup...true.The hospital where I worked is a very famous one and is staffed by many well known physicians and surgeons.The surgeons,in particularly,clearly had very high opinions of themselves.But they *were* very highly skilled so I guess you can say that "it ain't bragging if you can back it up".
