Trump takes aim at district court vacancies as he remakes judiciary

WASHINGTON — President Trump has utterly remade the federal judiciary, filling vacancies that had been held open by congressional Republicans during President Barack Obama’s eight years in office. Just two years into his own term, Trump has successfully installed two Supreme Court justices — something it took Obama eight years to do — and appointed 40 circuit court judges, who handle the all-important task of fielding appeals.

But in recent months, the battle over judges has moved to district court, the lowest of three major rungs of the federal judiciary and where most major cases — whether concerning guns or health care — begin (a few of those eventually end up at the Supreme Court, after the appeals process). So far, Trump has successfully appointed 64 district court judges, about the same number as Obama at this point in his first term.

Trump, however, is likely to make dozens more appointments in the coming months, as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has made confirming conservative justices a top priority. Losing either the presidency or the Senate majority next year would effectively put an end to that project.

The focus on district courts is a matter of necessity. “There have to be vacancies in order to fill them,” says Mike Davis, a former top Senate Judiciary Committee aide to Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, who was chairman of that committee in the previous Congress. “President Trump, Chuck Grassley and Mitch McConnell did a phenomenal job of filling circuit court vacancies,” said Davis, who now runs the Article III Project, an organization that advocates for a conservative judiciary. The Trump administration now has only five circuit court vacancies to fill.

Very biased article. But nice to see their worry.

Also the author need to do his homework. Barack Obama filled two supreme court vacancies in his first term -just like Trump. And as to vacancies "being held open by congressional republicans," Obama has the exact same number of federal judicial confirmations as Bush (the author makes no mention of vacancies held open by "congressional democrats.")

Here in Oregon, I just got an email from the bar association reporting a vacancy on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. The email informed me I should contact Senator Wyden’s office if I wished to be considered for the vacancy. The Oregon Republican Party passed a resolution attempting to alert the President that the judicial appointment process has been hijacked in this state, without success.

I hoe Justice Thomas takes a well-deserved retirement and let’s Trump have another pick.

And maybe we can find a way to get the wise latina or the fat bull-dyke convinced it is better for them to retire too.

Also, use whatever blackmail they had on Roberts to force him out too.

“... women’s reproductive rights....”

NO, it’s called ABORTION, MURDER, INFANTICIDE.

Women can “reproduce” as much as God will allow.

Thou SHALL NOT murder. God’s law not man’s law.

(There’s the Supreme Court and then there is the “Supreme Being’s Court”)

What about the child’s reproductive rights? Half of all aborted children are female. They’ll never get the opportunity to exercise their so-called “women’s reproductive rights”. Males have no reproductive rights AT ALL!

“Rights” my ass! It’s all about convenience. I spread my legs, it felt good at the time, but now I want to take it back.

Never mind that God has blessed me (YES, BLESSED) with a child, I just want to “get rid of it”. You know KILL it. Yes, “IT”.

Never mind that God has numbered the hairs on “it’s” head.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,”

Reminds me of a lyric ... “each one is handmade by Jesus.”

A Billion Starving People (partial lyric)

by Keith Green

“I find it hard to just ignore, the murdered unborn children,
Yes times have changed, but still God warns, you shall not take a life.
I want to save a life today, I want to keep one alive for my Father,
Who will avenge the blood!
Of weak and helpless ones someday - whose lives are spilled out like water,
Lambs in the slaughter, and each one is handmade by Jesus.”

song and video.

The “Wise Latrina” has serious Type 1 DIabetes. That’s our real hope with her. As for the fat bull dyke, whom I refer to as the Fat Yenta, we can only hope that she chokes to death on a generous helping of Brisket.

Roberts is the strongest conservative on the courts. He has stated publically repeatedly that he is not retiring any time soon. Time enough in POTUS 7th year.

But I hope he does retire before Trump leaves is all I am saying.

I agree. President Trump needs to get someone in that spot equally conservative, 35 years younger.

I hope the Republican circuit judges that are eligible for senior status step up and allow the appointment of younger justices as well, in POTUS second term.

And I hope that POTUS has voter integrity squarely in his sights for 2020.

Agreed. As much as I respect Justice Thomas as the finest legal mind on the SCOTUS, I’d like to see him retire so we could put a younger Justice in that seat. He’s 70.

Which was unsuccessful, the hijacking or the alerting?

The alerting. The hijacking was very successful. Wyden’s staff, running a selection committee controlled by Democrats, managed to exclude the real conservatives for the District Court seat last time around. So no real improvement in Oregon federal judges yet.

Thank you for the reply. Is president Trump obliged to respect the recommendations of the (democrat) selection committee? Or can he nominate whomever he pleases?
