DONALD TRUMP’S BIGGEST MISTAKE IN US-CHINA TRADE WAR(trunc)
the South China Morning Post ^ | 1 JUN 2019 | LESLIE FONG

China’s collective memory of a century of humiliation by foreign powers, beginning with the First Opium War, has steeled its resolve

American politicians just do not understand the power of national self-esteem that underpins China’s resilience

What stiffens the back of China’s leaders and people as they confront a United States bent on subjugating their country through economic and other means?

I would argue that it is their collective memory of the century of humiliation by foreign powers that began with the First Opium War (1839-1842), a period of unforgettable injury to national pride best captured in that infamous sign “Dogs and Chinese not allowed” which was hung at the entrance of a park in the so-called British concession inside Shanghai.

American politicians who think of relations between nations only in terms of transactions and deal-making just do not understand the power of national self-esteem that underpins China’s resilience – or the strength that the Chinese can draw from the depths of their soul.

Perhaps some of the hawks in the American establishment do get it, but just do not care. Doubtless, they believe America might will prevail, as it seems to have over the past few decades when the US rode roughshod over other countries.

And so the Trump administration kept turning the screws, only to find that a people who have stood up at long last after being on their knees for so long are determined not to genuflect again – ever. It will understand soon enough that in the face of even the most intense bullying, the Chinese will not roll over like the Canadians or the Japanese.

Trump will never get a concession about intellectual property rights. The Chinese economy is built on theft and making reverse engineered products. If China’s economy tanks, then they will face severe social unrest.

Trump is not bullying the Chinese nor demanding they genuflect or something. If anything it’s the Chinese who try to bully. The whole premise of the article is BS.

The Chinese also deal in the long term more so than the U.S. They will just wait for Trump to leave office. In the meantime they may make some small concessions if Trump is willing to accept them. It’s not like the communist Chinese have public opinion polls to worry about.

Who’s trying to subjugate whom?

China trades unfairly, steals IP, and violates agreements with currency manipulations.

Get a grip, Chinese press.

They can ‘save face’ all they want.

But it’s going to cost them.

The biggest mistake was when we failed to nuke those gooks back across the Yalu river back in ‘52.

You have it pretty much spot on. The Chinese are going to lose the economic war with Trump. We will suffer. They will suffer more. Probably much more.

But I’m afraid the Chinese leadership is willing to tough it out. The people suffer but the leaders don’t. Waiting to see how it goes in 2020 seems like an obvious strategy. Waiting until 2024 is not out of the question.

OTH, Trump has no such option. He needs our strong economy to hold up for at least another 17 months to win in 2020. And the Mexico Tariff Ploy adds to his risk.

But, personally, I support Trump on all of this. It is a high stakes gamble that we need to win. And, IMHO, worth the risk.

Idiocy.
The whole of China’s interest in the “trade war” is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

So this is about reparations. We “owe” them.

This is what pisses me off about the Russia war-mongers: They’re our natural ally and on the front line. Yet the left and neocons are pushing Russia & China together.

Asshats.

I agree, but the tariffs are (far) too small, in my view.

They need to increase tenfold, and expand to all products.

Very, very wishy-washy at the moment.

If they’re that upset you’d think they’d return all that rice Trump sold them.

We could expand all tariffs so they fully fund the federal government and eliminate the federal income tax. Back to the past. Tax savings offset price increases.

The biggest mistake of Trump’s in the ‘trade war’ is not aligning with our ‘allies’.
But our allies need to be shown the way.
So he had no choice IMO.

China’s collective memory of a century of humiliation by foreign powers...

Rather a short memory that doesn't remember the Dzungar genocide.

I think the Chinese are underestimating how deep the support in America is for Trump’s stand against them. Its not just Republicans either. China’s been cheating in a variety of ways for decades. Everybody knows it.

One of two things is going to happen.

China is either going to accept the need to change how it does things OR a lot of its trade with America is going to be replaced by other countries as American retailers and others redirect their supply chains away from China.

Trump should not make any deal with China. China’s communist Party can keep stoking hatred for America all they want. America just has to keep the tariffs on. And once a year just raise them 5%. We don’t need or want a deal. China uses our companies to control our media and our economy. We don’t need that. We don’t need China.
