White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney said Sunday that President Donald Trump is "deadly serious" about levying a 5% tariff on Mexican goods if the Mexican government doesn't step up enforcement of illegal immigration on the southern side of the border, and now it appears the Mexican government is serious about complying to avoid a trade war.

But hopefully the president can get something accomplished.
The handwringing about the horrible devastation that the tariffs are supposed to wreak on our economy does its part to help influence Mexico in the right direction. If it is going to do these terrible things to us it will bury the Mexican economy.
Not until we see some improvement
Keep the 5% increases UNTIL IT STOPS
I guess these putrid turds didn’t get the memo:

Trust, but verify.
Mexico cannot afford a trade war of any kind. They are already a nearly lawless country on the verge of civil unrest anyway.
It would not take much to push it over the edge, and the companies manufacturing there will be gone in an instant if the system gets disrupted.
But wait, the GOP is just about to surrender on the issue.
At least give the GOP time to surrender before anything at all is even tried!
Hope the spineless GOP RINO senators aren’t going to sabotage this progress by forging a veto-proof majority to override PDJT’s strategic maneuver to impose tariffs on Mexico.
The RATS want the illegal votes to keep flooding in while the RINOS seek to protect their coveted cheap labor express.
It’s so exasperating to have a brilliant POTUS who has to keep working all alone to fulfill his promises.
This is not the end of trade negotiations, not even the beginning of the end. But this is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.
Someone tell Senator Cruz to shove this article up his crybaby bunghole.
The Mexican president needs to stop the 30k Mother of All Caravans, heading as we speak to the U.S. southern border, before he is to be taken seriously.
Hold out a little longer, Obrador. The Senate Republicans will rescue you!
The uniparty at work. The legislative branch that let Obama do whatever the hell he wanted to, suddenly wants to undermine Trump and the USA in every possible way.
The first, best sign of improvement would be Mexico totally disbanding, ending, and deporting the people in the 30k Mother of All Caravans heading to the U.S. southern border.
seeing is believing
Mexicans authorities SAY they will cooperate, but until there is concrete evidence, keep the pressures and sanctions on.
In some ways, this is much like dealing with China, Iran or North Korea. First you have to engage their self-interest, and show them consequences of continued defiance.
We don’t want to put a part of our fleet off Vera Cruz, just yet. But if the Mexicans even THINK there is a possibility of that happening, all their worst nightmares may be just about to come true.
Alas, poor Mexico. So far from God, and so close to the United States.
No deal. When it’s already being done then and only then will taffifs come off
But wait, the GOP is just about to surrender on the issue.

The president was making progress so the alarmed GOP senate had to spring into action to stop him. That was a close one; they almost waited too long. /sarc
I wouldn’t trust them.
Libtard socialists just lie. End justifies the means.
Leave the tariff in place until we have proof of their conviction to resolve this issue
When its already being done then and only then will taffifs come off

That is exactly right. No deals, no agreement, no nothing until we see tangible signs of progress in halting the flow of immigrants and illegal drugs. Words are meaningless.
Don’t tell us what you’re going to do; call us when you’ve done it.
