Trump is far more socially liberal than his supporters, especially the Christians. I have no idea why Trump thinks that his acceptance of homosexuality is a winning issue. It is a loser on every front. The homosexuals hate him because he associates with Christians or Evangelicals. Hating Trump is an indirect hatred toward God. You can’t cater to Christians and then support homosexuality. The two are incompatible. I don’t know who is advising Trump on this issue (or any issue for that matter), but he is getting some bad advice.

I suspect that the president has given the minimal support required so that there wasn’t an all-out attack on him by the gaystapo. He’s gotten some good support from homosexuals, such as Brandon Stroka or whatever his name is....I suspect he’s wanting to capitalize on that with the election coming up. He can’t very well condemn them. His focus seems to be on the decriminalization of homosexuality. One can be against the act of homosexuality and still not want to see it as criminal.

On this, he does not necessarily need bad advice. As you say, he is already “socially liberal” personally and historically.

It is the downside to his being a non-ideological private-sector pragmatist.
