Nobody is happy about Donald Trumps new threat to slap tariffs on Mexico unless it clamps down on migrants crossing the border. Well, almost nobody.
Investors? Theyre panicking. Stocks are down. So are treasury yields, which is a sign that folks are worried and fleeing to safe assets. Mexico? What do you think? Republicans in Congress? Senate Finance Chair Chuck Grassley says the move is a misuse of presidential tariff authority and counter to congressional intent. The business lobby? Its peeved. Trumps own advisers? Some of them are reportedly furious. Specifically, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, a free trader, and U.S. Trade Rep. Robert Lighthizer, known for his protectionist streak, are both apparently opposed.
So whos pleased? Presumably Stephen Miller, the spiritual keeper of this administrations anti-immigrant flame. Like many of the Trump administrations worst ideas, CNBC reports this Mexico one belonged to him. He apparently sprang the plan while Vice President Mike Pence was traveling and Larry Kudlow, the White Houses top economic adviser and another free trade advocate, was busy having surgery. It seems the adults went away for the week and Miller decided to throw a xenophobic rager that might sink the economy.
Up until very recently, I havent been too worried about the effect of Trumps trade war on growth. Yes, his tariffs on China are a rather large tax on American businesses and consumers. But theyve only slowed the economy a bit so far. Beijings retaliation has made life complicated for farmers, but theyre getting bailed out.
Now, though, Im starting to feel anxious. Trump announced that on June 10, he plans to place a 5 percent tariff on all Mexican goods and leave it there until such time as illegal migrants coming through Mexico, and into our Country, STOP.

Indeed!!!!.......
.....Kudos to Stephen Miller!!!!
But WE know our President makes the final decision.
Nothing else has worked.
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, a free trader
I guess to the Wall St/Goldman Sachs crowd, free trade is making sure that all the big Wall St investors can make money with shitty trade agreements while Joe 6Pack loses his job to some Mexican.
Imagine where this country would be if the President had a Republican Congress and administration that gave a shit as much as he does.
All of Trimps best overseas speeches are written by Stephen Miller. He has an acute understanding of different cultures and respect for the histories of civilizations. Unlike the lefties. Miller is most definitely NOT a racist.
Doesnt matter. Anyone who works for, or supports Trump is a racist.
If you are white? You are racist.
If you are a christian? You are racist
I think you got it. Took me a while. But eventually I got it.
The author is reaching long term economic conclusions after....3 days?
I’m an American of Chinese descent. I must be a racist too!

Waiting for Godot, William Beckett’s play that became the ultimately in absurdity web ut was first performed in 1953, has a new contender for that title. Slate’s stories could be compiled into a nonsensical play and it would be the undisputed King of the Theatre of the Absurd. Sorry, Beckett. You’re a has-been now.
Maybe liberal policies will kill the country. Like mass invasion of low skilled savages that instantly become a liability on public services that in turn cost money which raises taxes which in turn take money out of the greater economy. Not to mention wages depressed. Nice try commie Slate.
This is a pattern of demeaning Republican presidents that dates back at least to Reagan. It is NEVER the president himself making any decisions which the base wants, but rather some nebulous ‘controlling entity’, in this case Stephan Miller. Under Bush Jr. it was Karl Rove, or Cheney.
And there’s the implied challenge to the Republican president - PROVE that you are your own man, that you are not controlled by anyone, and, of course, the way to do that is to simply do what the left demands.
And, needless to say, you NEVER hear anything like that regarding Democrat presidents, as they’re always smart enough to think on their own.
“So whos pleased?”
Me. I am pleased. Glad Trump is kicking ass.
And I wish they could find a way to capture half, or 3/4 of the money illegals in the U.S. are sending home to Mexico via Western Union or similar. Deposit it in a “wall fund”. Someone said that would be considered a tax, and Congress never would approve it. But if they’re not legal, I’d think illegal status would override laws for Americans.
Reducing the amount of money would make it hurt. I know it’s been mentioned before, and it’s easy. Just do it already!
“Miller is most definitely NOT a racist.”
Isn’t he Jewish? I thoight I heard him say he is.
Never a word about Valerie Jarrett.
Simply sending the 40 million illegals here now would save taxpayers enough to fund the wall multiple times over—every year.
Sure, some dislocation in the economy as it adjusts, but far, far better for Americans and our country in the long run.
Jordan Weissman, there is an unwritten rule of debate that when a debater goes ad hominem (that's attacking the person and not the issue for you journalism majors) he has lost the argument. You should have called Dennis Miller a doody head. Save some time. "xenophobic rager" How clever! Not.
You idiots on the left want to divert the argument of defense against an illegal invasion and turn it into a emotional attack by raaaaaacist. Cowards.
Stephen Miller, comme ci comme ca
