Experts are warning America has become too dependent on China for its medicine -- everything from painkillers, to antibiotics, and even aspirin can all be sourced back to a country the Department of Defense considers an adversary.
The Food and Drug Administration estimates that at least 80 percent of the active ingredients found in all of America's medicines come from abroad primarily China.
"Imagine if China turned off that spigot," said Rosemary Gibson, author of "China RX: The Risks of America's Dependence on China for Medicine." "China's aim is to become the global pharmacy to the world -- it says that. It wants to disrupt, to dominate, and displace American and other Western companies."
In 2015, China unveiled "Made in China 2025," a national plan to make it the world's leader in 10 high-tech manufacturing sectors, including bio-medicine, by 2025.
The new national security warning comes as China is threatening to weaponize its dominance in mining rare earth minerals against the United States, in an escalation of the ongoing trade war.
"I have no doubt that they would consider weaponizing their dominance of the pharmaceuticals market if they felt that that would give them an advantage over us strategically," retired Brig. Gen. John Adams told Fox News. Adams is also president of Guardian Six, a defense research consulting firm.
In a worst-case scenario, experts warn, China could withhold supply of medicines like important antibiotics, or degrade the quality of our medicines -- even put lethal contaminants in them. Even when it comes to treating anthrax, China is the largest exporter of the building block to make ciprofloxacin, an anthrax antidote.
The more probable threat from China, however, is that it could make America's prescription drugs more expensive.

Metric would be S-tonne..
Can you name just 10 of the "thousands" of the ingredients or medications for which China is presumably the sole supplier?
I'm not talking traditional Chinese herbals, not bearing labeling making therapeutic claims. I'm talking about ingredients used in medications approved for marketing in the US by FDA.
FReegards!
The companies move out of US because they could be used out of business if something went wrong with a few people. I don’t know if that has been corrected by having them state every possible side affect now.
It’s neither measure: for drugs, it’s apothecary.

With a great many undoubtedly made exclusively in China.
steve86 posted a great link. Also, are you or anyone you know taking blood pressure meds specifically Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs)?
We have been experiencing a two year - multiple recalls - marathon because of a manufacturing by-product contaminant in this class of meds and various rx drug products because of poor mfging practices concerning the base ingredient. The problem is that the contaminant can cause cancer. Most people don’t cotton to the idea that they may have been taking a cancer causing rx for maybe up to the last 5 years (or more). Yes, it is very important to not let one country control so much of our base ingredient source. Don’t get me started on end product mfgs in India, Puerto Rico, and other third world countries.
Yeah, multiple people in my family have been through the losartan / valsartan thing.
I knew the answer to my question when I asked it.
You have mistakenly assumed that all those Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients are approved for incorporation into US-marketed medicinal products. They are not.
A current listing of all API's which have been approved for incorporation into US products may be found here: Drug Master Files
I was at one time in my career a Review Chemist who served at FDA. Part of what I did was to review the contents of Drug Master Files which contain all the manufacturing process and stability data necessary to support a drug product applicant's product filing which incorporates the API's.
Drug substances used in products approved for marketing in the US have received thorough assessment of supportive data on file state-side and FDA's inspection teams which visit the facilities during the approval process and regularly afterwards are the best in the world.
As a consultant in my own firm I have audited pharma, biologic, and device firms all over the world. This includes a number of Chinese facilities. One in particular located just outside of Shanghai was one of the best facilities I have seen in my 23 years in business.
One cannot simplistically leap to the assumption that all drug substances made in China are crap. Those incorporated into US-approved medicines must meet high standards of manufacturing, and qualification. FDA generally does a good job of ferreting out the bad actors.
That is not to say that all facilities I have audited pass muster the first time, and I have often been asked on the back side of making observations to help with developing remediation plans to close the the gaps in their quality systems.
Some facilities I've seen can't measure up and I will advise my clients to choose others for their products. Were FDA to visit them, they too would likely reject them, as well.
China has this vision for a "Made in China 2025" where they see themselves as the leaders in significant manufacturing sectors, but, while they may be ones who see themselves that way, they will not be the innovators they will need to be to formally establish themselves credibly that way in the world's eyes.
They can copy a lot of things well, and they can often mass produce, but they are not the innovators driving techno-logic advancements and improvements, and least of all in medical sciences.
They don't have the societal freedom required to do so meaningfully and creatively.

Great info and thanks for the bio. Appreciate the work you do and efforts to provide safety for us. Thanks for helping me understand a deeper dimension within this issue.
