Ever since El Martinez started asking to be called by the gender-neutral pronouns they/them in the ninth grade, they have fielded skepticism in a variety of forms and from a multitude of sources about what it means to identify as nonbinary.
There are faculty advisers on Els theater crew who balk at using they for one person; classmates at Els public school on the outskirts of Boston who insist El cant be multiple people; and commenters on Els social media feeds who dismiss nonbinary gender identities like androgyne (a combination of masculine and feminine), agender (the absence of gender) and gender-fluid (moving between genders) as lacking a basis in biology.
Even for Els supportive parents, conceiving of gender as a multidimensional sprawl has not been so easy to grasp. Nor has Els suggestion that everyone state their pronouns gained much traction.
So last summer, when the Massachusetts State Legislature became one of the first in the nation to consider a bill to add an X option for nonbinary genders to the M and F on the state drivers license, El, 17, was less surprised than some at the maneuver that effectively killed it.

Again, calendar set back to 0 days without a honk.
Just call the IT.
Don’t pander to the mentally ill. A man in a dress is not a “she”. A fruitcake is not a “they”. These people are attention whores.
If “X” is a new gender, then why are “X”s allowed to compete in sports with a “M” or “F”? Shouldn’t they be competing against other “X” only, just as males v. males & females v. females? X v.X should be the CORRECT competition for them
Just when you thought people couldn’t get any crazier along comes the NYT promoting this nonsense.
According to the author we need to state people’s names like this:
Donald Trump (him/his) or for the mixed up teen El Martinez (them/their).
Total Insanity.
As someone else has said, if I had a dollar for every sex/gender, I would have two dollars and a bunch of counterfeits.
What poet said they contain multitudes?
I got three days of Facebook jail for violating FB standards with this simple post.
‘What was “IT”? A DNA XX or a DNA XY?’
There should be a “None of your business” box, maybe?
What was IT? A DNA XX or a DNA XY?
That's because TRUTH is the new HATE SPEECH!
IT is insane.
I actually ran into this at a former employer. He decided he was female. I referred to it as an IT or by name (new) but would not go along with the gender delusion. Was punished for being disrespectful and sent to diversity training for homophobia/transphobia/disrespect.
It escalated (literally and figuratively) when I wouldn’t share bathrooms. I went to others further in the building than the most convenient one to the work group, and it followed me. It thought that part of the female experience was going to the bathroom in groups AND that I needed to be exposed to it, get used to it, to become more tolerant.
A six foot seven man standing in front of the bathroom stall when I come out screaming at me because I screamed at opening the door and seeing him standing there ... and the company blamed ME for it.
I am old enough to remember that employment applications had ‘SEX” for a fill in space.
I would answer “YES-OFTEN”.
Those were the days !!!!!
Wow. I am glad to be self employed.
Everyone should just click non-binary and discredit the whole thing....always click the craziest identity checkbox, since anyone can be anything now.
