Interesting find - headline... "Japan just found a 'semi-infinite' deposit of rare-earth minerals and it could be a 'game-changer' in competition with China
Jeremy Berke Apr. 13, 2018, 12:26 PM"
Story highlights... "Japan started seeking its own rare-earth mineral deposits after China withheld shipments of the substances amid a dispute over islands that both countries claim as their own, Reuters reported in 2014. ...
A new finding that could change the global economy...
The newly discovered deposit is enough to "supply these metals on a semi-infinite basis to the world," the study's authors wrote in the study. ...
The cache lies off of Minamitori Island, about 1,150 miles southeast of Tokyo. It's within Japan's exclusive economic zone, so the island nation has the sole rights to the resources there. ..."

hmmmmmm.....let's see, now
(infinity)/2 = INFINITY
My own sister in law has been protecting a rare earth mine she owns in A,Asia for years. She has to stake her claim annually and spend time every summer warding off the people who wish to steal it from her.
Maybe my sister-in-law will be a very rich lady soon.
This find dates from 2013. The island is also called Makin Island, yes, that Makin Island. The one we took in WWII.
The minerals are in deep water mud.
We also have our own large deposits on the Idaho - Montana border.
semi-infinite ? interesting choice of words.
Sorry, Marcus Island not Makin.
Anyway. The island was ours until 1968.
The deposits are 160 mi south in over 5,000 meters of water.
We have more than we’ll ever need right here in the Rocky Mountain region. Eco terrorists and corruptocrats have kept us from mining and refining it. That is all over now. Once China pulls this, their FINAL card, Trump will declare a national emergency, and it will be off the races.
That was the first thing I thought of when I saw the headline!
I just read an article over the weekend saying China did make that exact threat after last round of Tariffs started.
The US and Europe grew dependent upon them in the supply of rare earths as well as many other things because we are lazy and we don't want or need to jump through the regulatory hoops to get the mines opened and the ores smelted here in America. The environmental laws have stopped the mining and smelting in America but they haven't "Saved the planet" at all. The regulations have pushed the extraction and smelting into someone else's backyard, where environmental concerns are far less stringent and the poisoning of waterways and groundwater are distant concerns over the money to be made with centuries old practices.
The discovery off Marcus Island is good because it puts China on notice that the civilized world can find workarounds to their efforts to manipulate markets. The US also needs to make a big push to develop our own resources. The enviro-nuts will be making the same old tired screaming noises and the regulations which strangled domestic basic industries will be exploited again by the moneyed libtard lawyers, hoping for the same result. We need to go toe to toe with them and show that technology can limit or mitigate environmental damage. Every mine will be a retirement plan for the lawyers obstructing development until we act to make basic extractive industry a part of a national priority.

Actually I just ran across a link to a similar article from today....

The problem with mining REs in the US is self-inflicted, as you can see from your map. The big issue is what to do with thorium, since it is slightly radioactive. thoriumremix.com is a good location to learn about all the people trying to design and promote molten salt reactors, and deal with thorium (at no cost to taxpayers). Rehabilitation of thorium will allow US to mine and process REs again. DJT could direct the various agencies to accomplish this goal.
By the looks of that map we and Canada need to start digging in our in backyard.
Spot on!
China is not in a very good position to fight a trade war right now and the very stable genius in the White House knows it. He is turning the screws.
The Chinese are probably on the way to build an island nearby.
