Malaysia to send back plastic waste to foreign nations

Malaysia will send back some 3,000 metric tons (3,300 tons) of non-recyclable plastic waste to countries such as the U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia in a move to avoid becoming a dumping ground for rich nations, Environment Minister Yeo Bee Yin said Tuesday.

Yeo said Malaysia and many developing countries have become new targets after China banned the import of plastic waste last year.

Last week, the Philippines said it would ship back dozens of containers of garbage which Filipino officials were illegally shipped to the country from Canada in 2013 to 2014.

Yeo said 60 containers stacked with contaminated waste were smuggled in en route to illegal processing facilities in Malaysia and will be sent back to their countries of origin.

I can't believe there isn't some deserted area in the world where this stuff can be buried rather than dumping it into the ocean. For the children.

There are ways to recycle this stuff...

Environmentally smug, self-righteous Canadians get busted again, eh?

Interested in some beach front property in Malaysia? You can resell for a huge profit after a little cleaning up.

Plastic is petroleum. I would think some smart individual/company could make a lot of money figuring out what to do with all this plastic waste that is being “recycled”.

Composite decking is a good example. There are millions of plastic bags being turned into composite decking and outdoor furniture.

Why not just burn this “recycled” plastic?

“”Filipino officials were illegally shipped to the country from Canada””

Wonder when AP will hire some proof readers...Nothing worse than having Filipino officials illegally shipped..ANYWHERE!

I wonder what the environmental cost of shipping the plastic all around the world, instead of just dumping it in a local/regional landfill?

Trucks, ships, heavy equipment, etc all run on fossil fuels

What is with those “nice” Canadians and thier garbage? The country is huge and is 90% undeveloped wilderness and they can’t find places to put thier rubbish?

3300 Tons? That's a couple of hundred trash truck loads. Or a pile the size of a very small house.

Whatever is the world to do with such a crisis?

I think "Plastics" will replace "Global Warming/Cooling/Whatever" as the new enviro-fad du jour.

These should be loaded into a rocket(s), shot into space, and either left adrift far from earth, or detonated beyond the atmosphere

You would think that Canada and Australia had enough such places that there’d be no need for an international shipment.

It probably all came from Vancouver where a 900 square foot condo cost $1.3 million or more. Vancouver is surrounded by mountains and water.

I doubt it came from the Yukon, northern Quebec, or the Northwest territories. However, it could be loaded on trucks or railcars and sent to northern Alberta instead of South Pacific.

There is plenty of room for landfills. This whole thing is a farce.

It seems like a lot of stuff is made out of plastic that doesn’t need to be.

A lot of pics like this have come out since the Phuket tsunami and I am pretty sure most of this stuff is awash in the ocean because so many communities were literally wiped off the map.

All that stuff washed out to see and collects in large floating islands of debris. It’s wrong and actually dishonest to make out that so much of that has been intentionally dumped out there.

That is not to say that illegal dumping isn’t going on...but it’s time to be honest about all this.
