HOMOSEXUAL sex is illegal in famously-conservative Singapore, which was meticulously shaped by its former Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, who died in 2015.
So an understandable collective gasp of surprise and disbelief reverberated across social media platforms on Friday when it was announced online that Lees own grandson had married his gay lover.
In an Instagram post on Friday, May 24, Heng Yirui published an image of himself with his boyfriend, Li Huanwu son of the late premiers son, Lee Hsien Yang dressed in matching white shirts and khaki pants at a game reserve in Cape Town, South Africa.
The image was accompanied by Hengs message: Today I marry my soulmate (Li). Looking forward to a lifetime of moments like this.
Li confirmed his South Africa nuptials in an interview with the South China Morning Post on Saturday, saying: Today would have been unimaginable to us growing up. We are overjoyed to share this occasion in the glowing company of friends and family.
South Africa legalised same-sex marriages in 2006, and has been a leading destination for gay weddings.
Lis matrimony comes just a week after Taiwan became the first country in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage.
Homosexual relationships are not recognised in Singapore, and homosexual activity is illegal under Section 377A of the republics Penal Code.
Nevertheless, news of Li tying the knot which was picked up by Singapores independent portals, but steered clear of by the countrys mainstream media has elicited a largely positive reaction across Asia.
From Facebook to WeChat, from China to Singapore, messages of support drowned out expressions of disdain and disapproval over the wedding, with many expressing hope that Lis marriage heralds a new era for the LGBT community in the city state and across the region.
Lis own father, Hsien Yang, expressed his delight over the occasion to the South China Morning Post.
Li came out as gay and went public with his relationship with Heng in early 2018.

South Africa? Where they want to exterminate white people? The tribals will take a break from that to kill these two.
“HOMOSEXUAL sex is illegal in famously-conservative Singapore, which was meticulously shaped by its former Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew”
Actually Lee Kuan Yew was a dictator the way things were back then. But he was a benevolent dictator, and when I was visiting, it was one of the nicest counties on earth.
Attraction like this is abnormal to say the least. The compassionate thing to do is correct this abnormality, or at least try to.
It is a symptom of a complex of grace-blocking issues between the involved person(s) and God.
Sometimes secular psychological therapies have proven a channel of the grace of God, but a complete gospel approach is the best thing. This involves the sometimes difficult task of carrying God’s love to the affected people in other ways, such as visiting the STD-ridden and comforting them in their suffering while suppressing the urge to get all “I told you so” about it. These people have been “had” by the evil, evil tricks of the devil, and only the good, good truth of God can rebuke these tricks.
What does marriage mean to homosexuals? It’s not under God. It’s under government. That makes it not marriage.
Sadly, they will likely join the rush to claim asylum in the US.
That’d get him caned but good back home.
New Straights Times, /rimshot!
It’s supposed to be Straits, of course
He never had to advertise it to the world. It’s like a thumb in the eye to Singapore, the good as well as the bad and the ugly.
Who gives a crap and why is anyone posting queer images?
I was in Singapore in the late 70s, found it fascinating, to say the least. Totally safe night and day, beautiful hotels, etc in addition to a lot of OK but immaculate housing.
I saw Lee Kuan Yew on TV a few years later explaining the strict rules—no spitting on the street or in elevators, no laundry hung out windows, etc. His critics thought this was facism, but he explained, “You have to understand that many of these people were living in trees a generation ago. They need guidance to make this a first-rate country.”
It’s geographic location makes it a natural trading centers for countries of the world. When we were there, we saw well-preserved Dutch neighborhoods, English Colonial ‘hoods, etc. I don’t know whether they have escaped the brilliant modernization that’s happened since then.
I saw the movie, Crazy Rich Asians last year. I went just to see the scenery, the new buildings and hotels, etc. And was pleasantly surprised that it was an enjoyable movie too. See it if you haven’t done so already.
Similar to alcoholism.
They have to come to realize and admit they have a problem.
Only then can anyone help them.
It’s an issue on an international scale.
Like the “Dutch courage” of liquor, such relationships are a stand-in for the result of the love of God.
We can pity the people, but can’t make headway until God opens the door.
This begs for the question to be asked: how did Yew manage to raid the trees and pack their dwellers into cities? Something isn’t being told.
Yeah yeah queers are taking over the world, doesn’t mean we have to look at the ‘couple’, if I wanna puke I’ll just stick my finger down my throat.
