Trump Says Iran Nuclear Deal Possible as Sanctions Bite

President Donald Trump said on Monday a deal with Iran on its nuclear program was possible, crediting economic sanctions for curbing activities Washington has said are behind a spate of attacks in the Middle East.

"I really believe that Iran would like to make a deal, and I think that's very smart of them, and I think that's a possibility to happen," Trump said during a news conference with Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo.

"It has a chance to be a great country with the same leadership," Trump said. "We aren't looking for regime change -- I just want to make that clear. We are looking for no nuclear weapons."

Tensions have risen between Iran and the United States after this month's attack on oil tankers in the Gulf region.

Washington, a firm backer of Tehran's regional rival Saudi Arabia, has blamed the attacks on Iran, which denies the accusations.

The United States has deployed a carrier strike group and bombers to the Mideast region and an extra 1,500 troops to the Gulf, prompting fears of a conflict.

Trump's comments came after his national security adviser John Bolton said on Saturday that the United States had "deep and serious" intelligence on threats posed by Iran, without providing details.

This has become a pattern in Trump's dealmaking. He first puts people he wants to deal with (eventually) into a very disadvantageous position, starting with verbal invectives on Twitter and in speeches - demonizing them, berating them..followed by action (sanctions, tariffs..) to the point they are miserable. After a while, which could be weeks, months or even years, he throws out a little glimmer of hope.. ..but you know it doesn't have to be this way. We could do a deal.. This is Trump at his best. This is what he excels in and the retarded media haven't figured it out yet.

Negotiating.

We’ve never seen how the sausage gets made in public like this before.

Some of it’s bluff. Some of it’s hardline. Some of it’s give and take.

But prior to Trump, it was all us giving in to them and done behind closed doors with us gaining nothing and giving up everything. And the msm telling us how wonderful it all was.

Democratic Presidents have a habit of saving regimes that are hostile to the U.S. and on the edge of real financial and social upheaval. Clinton helped keep North Korea's economy and nuclear program afloat too.

Good observations. Media cannot see it because they cannot escape their preconceptions of him as a blundering sexist racist nincompoop.

You are correct. It is up to the people of Iran to rid themselves of the Moolahs and Assahollahs in whatever way they see fit. It is not our job.
