“This past January, the founder of Hauwei, Ren Zhengfei, said “No law requires any company in China to install mandatory back doors” referring to giving officials a key to access data on devices or networks. He continued with “I personally would never harm the interest of my customers and me, and my company would not answer to such requests.”

Very carefully worded. I could drive an ocean liner through all the “protections” for other nations classified information contained in that statement.

Exactly. Even if he’s not just flatly lying (which, he is) what would happen to his “me personally” guarantee if he’s no longer there? And what if it’s not a law, but a command from the supreme leader of his country?
