USDA Announces Support for Farmers Impacted by Unjustified Retaliation and Trade Disruption
U.S. Department of Agriculture ^ | 05/23/2019 | USDA Press

(Washington, D.C., May 23, 2019) – U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will take several actions to assist farmers in response to trade damage from unjustified retaliation and trade disruption. President Trump directed Secretary Perdue to craft a relief strategy to support American agricultural producers while the Administration continues to work on free, fair, and reciprocal trade deals to open more markets in the long run to help American farmers compete globally. Specifically, the President has authorized USDA to provide up to $16 billion in programs, which is in line with the estimated impacts of unjustified retaliatory tariffs on U.S. agricultural goods and other trade disruptions. These programs will assist agricultural producers while President Trump works to address long-standing market access barriers.

“China hasn’t played by the rules for a long time and President Trump is standing up to them, sending the clear message that the United States will no longer tolerate their unfair trade practices, which include non-tariff trade barriers and the theft of intellectual property. President Trump has great affection for America’s farmers and ranchers, and he knows they are bearing the brunt of these trade disputes. In fact, I’ve never known of a president that has been more concerned or interested in farmer wellbeing and long-term profitability than President Trump,” said Secretary Perdue. “The plan we are announcing today ensures farmers do not bear the brunt of unfair retaliatory tariffs imposed by China and other trading partners. Our team at USDA reflected on what worked well and gathered feedback on last year’s program to make this one even stronger and more effective for farmers. Our farmers work hard, are the most productive in the world, and we aim to match their enthusiasm and patriotism as we support them.”

Ahhh, nothing like 2x-dipping @ the ‘welfare trough’ (aka the public Treasury). Must be grand to NOT do your job...and get paid, have your surplus bought w/o question (to rot in a warehouse) and, now, get extra dinero ‘cuz the “pressure” from tarriffs

And the (R)N(C) will *SING* the praises of Socialist price-controls, price-protections, social engineering+

I'm viewing this as serious return fire to the ChiComms in their Trade War with the United States. Waiting to see if similar support will be forthcoming for other U.S. producers.

President Trump is playing hardball with Red China. Something we just haven't seen out of the White House since before President Nixon.

A point to remember, the last time we did this with a surging Asian Great Power, it was Japan. World War II followed.

Red China's military goal is to be able to take on the United States and win by 2025. Their Trade War supports that. President Trump is disrupting that plan. It's passed time!

This is all part of a larger whole. And it needs to watched very closely.

Surely you’re not saying that with a mouth full of some of the lowest priced food in the entire history of the world, are you?

Nah, a serious and wise Freeper wouldn’t make such a mistake.

That may be a good idea.

Can you explain how that will help the farm economy in 2019?

I don't think we or the federal government need to help the farm economy in 2019 or at any time.

It’s a thought. Does it have anything to do with the Trade War?

Well it would be the lowest priced food in world if it were truly free market and not government corrupt controlled.

You’ve inferred there is lower priced food to be found.

I challenge you to name the country/area.

So the taxpayers need to help the farm economy? Where in the Constitution should we be doing that? Are they such bad farmers that they cannot help themselves? The ones i see have several pieces of farm equipment, each one worth more than my house.

Why am I not surprised that you weren’t able to answer my question.

The American Farmer produces the widest variety of food and at the lowest prices this planet has ever seen.

And yet there seems to be no shortage of whiners.

There is no doubt that farmers would be better off without government interference, but they have interfered for decades.

Started back when food cost far more (in terms of a % of income) than it does now.

Trivia fact; cost of food, as a percentage of a family of 4 expenditures, fell 29% in the 39 years between 1970 and 2009. I used to have the chart, and I’m going by memory, but that’s pretty close.

Regard the cost of machinery, I’m not sure what the point was, after all it’s money the farmers family doesn’t get to spend on living expenses. Think of the grand vacations the farmers would prefer to have if they weren’t forced to spend the money on machinery.

Amazingly I was able to find the FR page with the article.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2616318/posts

In summary, food prices in 1969 were about 13.8% of income, by 2010 they were 9.5%, a decline of 31%.

I’m not whining and certainly do not dispute that American farm production is best in the world in cost, quantity and quality.

But, there is no need to subsidize the U.S. agricultural sector, Especially in the totally corrupt crony capital ethanol kickback scheme.
