Labor's federal election loss revealed my bias as an inner-city teen

...snip...

Countless friends, family and peers turned to social media to express contempt for the lack of focus on climate action, with an overwhelming consensus of despair and disappointment.

Though I too am devastated, my resentment shifted quickly: how could I have been so ignorant?

I am fresh out of high-school but my formative years were spent in a progressive bubble — in the suburbs of Sydney's inner west.

...snip...

In our bleak world marked by denial and division, echo chambers offer us hope.

They make us feel safe, and provide an illusion of unity and progress, and the promise of change.

Why is that so wrong?

As a first-time voter, my comfortable inner-western Sydney echo chamber certainly skewed my perception of reality.

Through social media, I received a narrow information base.

It is impossible to know whether online algorithms, my personalised feed, or "silent Tory syndrome" is to blame. But certainly, through a combination like this, I participated in what can only be described as a niche discourse, in a curated forum, where my beliefs were constantly presented as the norm.

Though gratifying, this left me unknowingly ignorant and inactive. As I was fed messages that reaffirmed my own beliefs, my broader judgement of the wider debates driving voters was undeniably skewed.

A very self-aware piece by a "liberal" (in the US sense of the word) who admits that she lived in a bubble before the Australian election. Worth reading.

And note “inner city” would appear to have a different meaning in Australia than in the U.S. I guess there it means “not rural”.

The Left all are living in bubbles that is why they have to cheat to win elections (USA) or ignore the results (UK)

Self aware? Perhaps.

In the end, she seems to simply want to try harder to spread her ideology.

She’s still ignorant, just a little less so. Very little.

Yes ‘ inner city’ in the Australian context are areas crawling with greenies, yuppies, dinks, homos, university zombies, chardonnay socialists etc. Little Ava’s federal electorate that she cites in this article includes suburbs like Balmain and Newtown. Ava probably goes to Sydney Uni. Like all uni’s these days it is an echo chamber. She learned nothing from the recent election. She is a brainwashed leftist cadre. Maybe she could spend her time calling for tolerance of conservative viewpoints, instead of the violent reaction her and her toadie friends always engage in

Yes, the inner city areas of Australia tend to be the richest areas, and include the most ‘progressive’ areas although there are also rich conservative areas.

The less salubrious higher crime areas tend to be outer suburbs.

Come to Chicago you will see the same thing. London and Rome are the same as well.
