I really think that there's something to that. You don't lose >2 million of your best young men and not suffer profound aftershocks decades later. The effects were not obvious immediately, as West Germany was run for 4-5 decades by men who survived the war. Since the '90s however, it was run by the children and grandchildren of that generation. The gene pool was severely deprived as a result of the catastrophic losses 1939-45.
