Scott Morrison has defied years of opinion polls and public expectation to lead the Coalition to a shock election victory.
"I have always believed in miracles," the Prime Minister declared as he claimed victory.
The result is a crushing defeat for the Labor Party, which was confident it could win majority government tonight, after six years of Coalition Government and leadership instability.
"It's always been for those of you watching this at home tonight, for me and for my Government, for all of my team, it's all about you," he told supporters shortly after midnight.
"Tonight is not about me or it's not about even the Liberal Party.
"Tonight is about every single Australian who depends on their Government to put them first."
At this stage, it is not clear whether the Coalition will govern in majority or need to rely on a partnership of independent MPs in a minority government.

And I am heading to bed - after midnight here, and it's been a great night.
Congratulations, Aussie patriots. Make Australia Great Again!
MAGA!
Coalition wins....
Media mourns.
Every single damned poll showed Labor ahead. Worldwide mainstream polling has gone swamp monster. It's all about manipulating perception.
The Australian media is not different to the BBC/Guardian CNN/MSNBC media.
Congratulations.

EU parliamentary elections coming up. May 23: UK likely to seat an additional 8 Brexit members (Farage/EFFD), and Netherlands 5 Baudet/Forum for Democracy members and 2 Wilders/PVV.
Your morning cup of coffee will be extra sweet. It will be a razor thin victory but our side should take whatever comes with grace.
If the Rats won by the same margin, they would call it a “mandate”.
So F ‘em. Rub their noses in it.
Oh indeed. I meant how we should be thankful for the result. On election night 2016 I wimped out early and decided to watch a John Wayne movie and went to bed with foreboding. Didnt sleep too well. Woke up around 3am just in time to see Trump make his victory speech. It was a feeling of lighthearted giddy ness and some surprise I took the news at that moment. I think a lot of conservative Australians are feeling similar today tonight tomorrow. Its already Sunday there.
Also should mention Salvini’s LN (Northern League) who stands to gain 20 seats. Haven’t counted them all but at least 50 Eurosceptic seats in the new EU parliament.
