After the Röhmputsch (subsequently referred to also as the "Nacht der langen Messer" = "Night of the Long Knives"), in late-June and early-July of 1934, the S.A. sank into virtual obscurity, or at least political insignificance.

Almost all of the persecution of the Jews, Gypsies, and other "undesirables" during the Nazi era occurred on the watch of the S.S.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Combine “Schutzstaffel” with “Sturnabteilung” and that is what you come up with. Or maybe “Abteilungstaffel”.

German is such a beastly language.
