Iran commander calls U.S. military in Gulf a target not a threat -ISNA

GENEVA, May 12 (Reuters) - A senior Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander said on Sunday the U.S. military presence in the Gulf used to be a serious threat but now represents a target, the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) reported.

The U.S. military has sent forces, including an aircraft carrier and B-52 bombers, to the Middle East in a move that U.S. officials said was made to counter "clear indications" of threats from Iran to American forces in the region.

The USS Abraham Lincoln is replacing another carrier rotated out of the Gulf last month.

"An aircraft carrier that has at least 40 to 50 planes on it and 6,000 forces gathered within it was a serious threat for us in the past but now it is a target and the threats have switched to opportunities," said Amirali Hajizadeh, head of the Guards' aerospace division.

"If (the Americans) make a move, we will hit them in the head," he added, according to ISNA.

U.S. President Donald Trump also has increased economic pressure on Iran, moving to cut off all its oil exports, to try to get Tehran to curb its nuclear and missile programs as well as end support for proxies in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen.

Speaking to CNBC in an interview to be broadcast on Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the U.S. deployments came in response to intelligence about potential Iranian attacks and aimed both to deter them and to be able to respond if necessary.

"We've seen this reporting," Pompeo said. "It's real. It appears to be something that is current, that is things we're worried about today."

Oh they will pay a price, but so will the young sailors on those ships.

The US never behaved like a great power after the hostages were taken. This only emboldened Iran. They were responsible for the manufacturing and deploying many of the IEDs that killed and maimed so many Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan. Iran of course supplied the missiles that periodically rake Israel. They purchased those shore to ship stealthy missiles from China despite American “objections” to China. Iran has developed the mindset that Japan had just prior to Pearl Harbor.

Like Japan, it is being economically squeezed by sanctions. Its leaders culturally hate America and its values.

All the incendiary ingredients and historical precedents are aligned. Sincerely hope our naval commanders are much more aware and ready than their predecessors were in 1941.

they can’t bamboozle him, as they did Obama

What are you talking about? hussein was on their side. Not only did he unfreeze their assets, he sent them another $150 billion from the backs of taxpayers.

It’s hard to be precise with 160 500lb gravity bombs

These days, the 500lb gravity bombs are JDAMS and are actually quite precise.

“Iran has developed the mindset that Japan had just prior to Pearl Harbor.”

That’s prima facie proof right there they are crazier than a sh!t house rat.

Japan was already a world power with at least 10X the industrial capacity of Iran, even now. They also had the second best Navy in the world.

Iran has nothing more than delusions of grandeur.

I don’t believe they are so unhinged, or stupid, to attack a US Capital Ship at sea with Iranian flagged forces. Or from Iranian soil.

Even the great Ronald Reagan let them get by with murdering a huge number of our marines.

Don't forget Carter letting them take our embassy.

Your reference says it was over in 1973. I was under several of these raids over 50 years ago. We have not heard what they are going to do next.

“I was under several of these raids over 50 years ago.”

Then you know they work.

When it’s necessary to take out concentrated troops and equipment, carpet bombing is the way to go.

It’s MUCH cheaper than precision weapons, and we can carry the tonnage.

The world hasn’t seen it for 50 years, as you said. It’s time they get reacquainted.

Bomb their nuclear program into dust. Then establish a no fly zone over Iran and take months to carefully bomb their military into the stone age.

“We’ve been d*ck dancing with these ragheads for 40 years. Way past time for an ass stomping.”

Back when the “Magic Negro” was p-resident, he had an opportunity to support an insurrection in Iran, that with our support, would have ended the “reign of terror” from the Mullahs in Iran. But as a Muzzie himself, he sat idly by and allowed the “Iranian leaders” to crush it. I sit here today and just wonder where we would be as a country, if we had had the Trump Presidency following Clintoons, bypassing both the BOOSH II and Obola Admins? Or better still, if The Trump Presidency had followed Reagan’s instead of that travesty known as the BOOSH I Presidency.

Hopefully you are right. If they don’t attack, the sanctions will weaken their economy and cause political and social instability. This will put an enormous strain on the bizarre mullahs who claim to welcome death. Not sure they will behave rationally and may very well repeat the mistakes that Japan made in a similar situation. Excessive pride, some military capability, hard pressed by sanctions and an enemy that you bitterly hate in range of your guns is a bad scenario.
