For more than four hours Saturday night, Mayor Bill Peduto sent multiple messages on Twitter, warning residents and visitors that towing would start at midnight for vehicles parked along the route of the Dicks Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon.
Problem is, towing started at 11 p.m., courtesy of the Pittsburgh police and city contractor McGann and Chester Towing & Recovery.
Mr. Peduto said he was in Cappys Cafe on Walnut Street in Shadyside when people came in about 11:30 p.m. complaining about cars being towed from streets in the area.
People were enraged, the mayor said Monday, when asked about the issue during an unrelated press conference on infrastructure matters.
About 10 cars were towed before midnight, Mr. Peduto said, adding that he was not happy with the confusion about when towing would begin. He said there had been a clear understanding for years that towing should begin at midnight before the race.
The citys Public Works Department also tweeted out Saturday night that towing was beginning at midnight.
Also, many people expressed frustration because they said some signs were not clearly displayed.
The mayor said he doesnt believe he acted inappropriately when he called Police Chief Scott Schubert and Rick McGann from the towing company late Saturday.
Was I upset? Certainly. So were the people who had their cars towed, the mayor said.
At 7:12 p.m. Saturday, the mayor tweeted, Reminder. Crews will be removing parked vehicles from the course at midnight. Please plan ahead.
A tweet at 9:35 p.m. said, 2 hours 25 minutes, Pittsburgh. Towing crews will be out at midnight. Plan ahead. Move your vehicle.
Then at 10:45 p.m.:... 1 hour & 15 minutes until all vehicles on the route will be towed ...

Never get between a two truck operator and his (your) money!
DANG!
I hope Dick’s Sporting Goods goes out of business and the dicks in office in Pittsburgh are run out of office.
It is not the tow operator at fault.
The police were there directing him.
Wouldn't it be a delight to have taken the family to see the fireworks, only to come out of the park and find your car gone?
Looks to me like the mayor did his due diligence in letting the people know.
Sam’l Colt could...or S&W.
They should have known better by inspection. You can’t even walk there. No parking why they have shuttles.
Anyone who chooses to hang out in a major American city these days deserves to get reamed.
Mayor sent out some tweets... Not everyone tweets.

^ This. They may not deserve it, but they should be prepared to get it. I don’t even go into my town of 1300 people unless it is absolutely necessary.
A few years ago, Maryland DOT missed prepping for a snowstorm that hit during rush hour. Some folks abandoned their cars in the roadside after being stuck for ten hours.
Instead of towing them to a parking lot, these goons impounded them.
A co-worked had to for over $350
Were these cars towed or relocated? There is a big difference.
How do the cars get to the new location?
Towing means the car was ticketed and taken to an impound lot. Relocated means it was moved from its current spot and taken to another LEGAL spot and no ticket was issued.
